One of the best RPGs I've ever played

Realms of Antiquity is a technical marvel and one of the best RPGs I've ever played. It's been about time it came to GOG. I purchased RoA digitally on release day and later even ordered the beautiful Collector's Edition to get the physical box, manuals and the cloth map. I also paid the additional price to get it on diskettes even though I don't own the original hardware. And later I even purchased the expensive additional bigger cloth map just to have everything of this game - that's how much I enjoy this game. The download version is easily worth the 20 USD, I'd say it's worth much, much more for there are literally dozens if not hundreds of hours of great adventuring in it. The world is diverse and of really epic proportions and there are many, many quests to experience. The quest design is elegant and multi-layered and many quests are very artfully inter-connected, gameplay is easy to learn and full of interesting encounters and tough turn-based battles against many different enemies (some of them with unique abilities), there are so many, many secrets to discover, hidden places and treasures. There are nine character classes to experiment and build a customized party of four with, but personally I decided to start as a the "Hero" class (alone in the beginning, but it's possible to pick up NPCs on the go and build a party). In the game there is a plethora of items, armor pieces, weapons of all kinds (even firearms) and a big sortiment of spells of different magic schools: Some of them for battle, others for adventuring and exploring the many deep caverns, lost canyons, dangerous woods and high mountains. To cut a long story short: Realms of Antiquity is one of the best RPGs I've played for many years. I very much recommend it to everybody out there looking for a truly classic but very accessible RPG with much content, a unique charme and style, countless hours of interesting quests and rewarding open world exploration.

One of the best RPGs

I'm extremely pleased to see this on GoG at last! I already own it on Steam and I've got another copy here purely because it deserves it. It's one of the most engaging RPGs I've played. The combat is interesting, the classes and characters feel different and the magic system is unique. It's a relatively new game that operates within the limits of an older system (The TI-99/4a and yes, it runs on original hardware if you choose). This does not, however, limit the game at all. In fact, in my opinion, it distils it into a well-crafted open world experience. There's a lot to discover here, quests, characters, plots, a world to explore; constrained only by your party's strength and preparedness. There are some things to get used to. The magic system is colour-based, using books of a certain colour to allow the characters to cast associated spells. This lends into the need to prepare correctly as inventory space is limited. It may be a negative depending on your outlook but I think it contributes to the game. There's a quick reference guide and a manual, which can be ignored, but I recommend you read it; it's a very useful guide to things like magic and also gives a good overview of all aspects in the game, there's also a hints section which gives some non-spoiler hints on areas you may be stuck on. I genuinely love this game. The world is interesting, the mechanics are satisfying, the stories are compelling and there's various outcomes to actions. This, coupled with the character types and various party make-ups, make it very replayable and enjoyable to discover.

Insanely great Ultima-like retro RPG

If you like RPGs, even if you're not a retro gamer, get this game. It's a brilliant masterpiece, with a massive open world, and literally everything and anything in it. Every possible class (fighter, thief, warlock, wizard, bard, etc...), dozens of unique items, complex and fun questlines with multiple decision branches affecting the world, hard dungeons, harder (optional) bosses. Everything is in it. Trust me.

Amazing

Coming from modern games and having my early gaming experiences based in AC2, Skyrim, GTA and Dishonored, I really didn't think this game would interest me. I was happily proven wrong. Snappy controls, a huge world, tons of quests, monsters and characters. The graphics are also charming in one sense but also leave a lot to the imagination. Picturing your party (or maybe solo adventurer if you're daring enough) treking through forests and dungeons is something you don't have to do with modern games with it all being laid by the devs but it's something I've found quite freeing. The devs have crafted something truly special and suprisingly engaging. I think this is the place to start if you want to start to explore games of the past. Take the chance, there's so much great stuff in this game and hopefully, like me, it'll lead you to explore the classics which have now largely been forgotten with time.

Pleasantly old

Fun little game with very basic controls, gameplay, graphics, and sound. Makes sense since it was created to run on an old computer. I enjoyed the tactifcal combat and exploring the world. There are some UI annoyances that bogged things down a little bit. The biggest thing is that there's no way to find out what your spells do before you cast them and no way to equip different spellbooks during battle (these control which spells you can cast). It was easy though to get into, relaxing to play, and overall a novel experience.
