Railroad Tycoon 2, making the sequel to a game that easily falls into the "legend" category is, well... exciting! Of course, it's also a fertilizer carload of work. An intricate cargo web and a dynamic financial environment set the stage for your chance at showing the world what a true robber baron is capable of doing. This isn't your mother's old 0-4-0 Grasshopper! The ability to buy and sell stocks, schedule train routes, optimize operations, lay rail, build stations, and take over companies make Railroad Tycoon 2 a strategist's dream. Meanwhile, an intuitive interface, beautiful terrain, detailed rolling stock, and attractive buildings are sure to please the most dedicated train enthusiasts.
Is all this too much? Then let your manager take over, and just sweat the big stuff! Hire and fire managers, each with talents and abilities far beyond those of digital men, to help run your company. You can also invite 15 of your closest friends to contest your title as a railroad tycoon in a real-time struggle for power. Legends are made to be lived up to, and Railroad Tycoon 2 is all that and a head of steam.
I've been looking for that train tycoon game to really scratch that itch I've been having. As a kid, I just liked to play with trains and wasn't exactly good at this game. But now in my 30s, everything clicks and it scratched that itch I've been having. I got sucked in, expecting only to play for a few minutes to see if everything works and before I knew it, I had completed an entire scenario and a few hours had passed.
Just as good as I remember it and just as relaxing as I remember it.
One warning: on Windows 10 at least, the screensaver, or Alt+Tabbing out, crashed the game. Make sure you save and exit the game before leaving your desk.
Overall one of the best in its genre -- I'm used to the UI from Civ 3 and Tropico!!! -- but -1 star for that caveat which will ingloriously end a scenario.
Why would anyone want to play a 20 + year old railroad sim game with crude graphics? Because it's a first rate game of logic, strategic planning and cutthroat economic war with your competitors. The business and stock market models are solid. The game will still challenge anyone, plus it's just fun to see if you can make a go of running a railroad.
