Description

Complete Edition includes Radio Commander: Squad Management DLC!

In Radio Commander you are playing as an American military commander serving in US Army during the Vietnam War. You will be carrying a heavy burden as your mission is to coordinate military operations taking place between 1965 and 1968.

But this is not just another RTS, in which you are an invisible being hovering over the battlefield. In Radio Commander situation reports are given to you in form of dramatic radio statements sent by troops fighting on the ground. And your only accessory is a strategic map, on which you can place tokens and notes.

UNIQUE VIEW ON REALISM

Radio Commander offers an unique experience very different from classic real time strategy games. It’s a bold try to redefine the genre, as the player will be involved in a decision making process much more realistic than those pictured by casual RTS titles. Ask for situation reports. Listen what your men have to tell you. Send evac choppers and nape drops. Defeat the invisible enemy.

DIVE INTO THE STORY

Experience the story of soldiers and their commander, trapped in the middle of bloody, chaotic, morally ambiguous Vietnam conflict. Dive into a scenario that doesn’t avoid the difficult issues of civilians trapped in the theater of action, shady CIA operations, and cynical political pressures. Discover those uneasy situations, presented in such cult classics as Platoon, Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now, which were happening on a daily basis for those serving in Vietnam. See for yourself how hard it is to make the right choices in the middle of a fire exchange with Vietcong.

DECIDE WHO LIVES AND DIES

Decide the fate of your soldiers. The choices you face will have a direct impact on the course of the game. They will also define views of your hero. Or maybe those are your views? Playing Radio Commander you must be prepared to answer tough questions about the righteousness of your actions, the price of a human life, and the toxic power of propaganda and stereotypes.

USE YOUR IMAGINATION

Radio Commander is not another empty action game. You will play as the commander operating from his tent, using only a radio and a map. You will be staring at the map for hours, listening carefully to the reports. Your decisions will affect lives of many people. Just like in real life, there are no fancy graphics and animations to help you imagine what’s happening on battlefield. Only you, your map, and skills. You have to listen and be smart. Thanks to this, level of immersion is much greater than in normal real time strategy games.

CHOOSE BETWEEN VARIOUS MEANS

You will take under your command not only units of infantry, air cavalry or field artillery, but also powerful units of air support. It’s in your will to order the jungle-burning nape drops, or devastating bombings. Are you ready to bring the rain of fire and burn the enemy positions to the ground? Are you sure that your soldiers are far enough and won't take damages? And does the ends always justify the means?

EXPERIENCE DEEP IN-GAME SYSTEMS

Beneath the narrative layer, hidden from your eyes, a deep and complex simulation is taking place. In Radio Commander every unit is described by unique set of statistics. You will have to worry about your platoons morale, supplies, and even their stamina. All those factors will be important during your soldiers' confrontations with enemy, unfriendly terrain and extreme Vietnamese climate. What will you do, when your choppers report, that they are out of fuel and forced to land in the middle of the jungle? Will you send the rescue mission risking the life of even more soldiers?

BOND WITH YOUR BROTHERS IN ARMS

Troops under your command are not just pawns on the map. They are complicated, multi-layered human beings, with their own voices, problems, strengths and weaknesses. Mutual trust is essential. They depend on your judgment and cool decisions, while you are hoping they’re giving their best. Discover hundreds of original dialogues and scenarios. Replay previously completed missions and alter the course of events by making different decisions and encountering different events.

HOURS OF GAME EXPERIENCE

Radio Commander includes:

- 9 main campaign missions (every mission is possible to complete in several different ways),
- 9 animated briefings,
- 15 unit types, including: infantry, evac choppers, gunships, field artillery, aerial reconnaissance, M113 armored personnel carriers, and napalm-carrying F4 Phantom jets (every unit is described by a unique set of statistics and communicates with commander using a different voice),
- full voice over,
- over 200 dialogue blocks, used to construct radio messages,
- over 600 story dialogues between units and the commander.

Squad Management DLC grants access to many new, unique mechanics that turns Radio Commander into an even more interesting and complex strategy game.

Gain the insight into each unit’s squad and get more attached to your subordinates. Learn their names. Remember faces of outstanding soldiers. Observe, as they improve skills (over 60 unique perks! some of them affects an entire unit) and are doing better on the battlefield. Move them between platoons. Take care of their health by sending them on a vacation. Recruit new soldiers and expel from service those who are unfit to fight. The more experience your troops gain, the better they will behave on the battlefield. For the purposes of the DLC, we have designed a comprehensive morale system - for every single soldier and the entire Baker Company.

But there’s more! Squad Management DLC also deepens the main story. Check out a beautifully designed glossary. In it, you will find portraits of all the main heroes and learn more about their backgrounds. Another new feature is a highly functional log that records all dialogues, decisions and events making it much easier to follow the story.

Key features:
- list of every unit’s personnel
- exp and leveling up system for units
- over 60 unique perks soldiers can learn on a battlefield
- soldiers’ portraits
- complex morale system for every soldier and whole Baker Company
- glossary with main heroes’ portraits and backstories
- promotion system
- moving soldiers between units
- sending soldiers on leaves
- enlisting newbies
- discharging soldiers
- log with all dialogues, missions’ outcomes, player’s decisions etc.

Scripts do not trigger

I played the first two missions and tried for about 4 hours, but in both missions I had trouble with scripts that would not trigger. SPOILERS: In the first mission you are supposed to burn down an enemy encampment, but first I had to leave and reenter the camp with another unit before the option would pop up. In the second mission you are supposed to bombard enemy positions with artillery fire (I read a guide after I tried for several hours and had completed it with major difficulties), but the artillery was never available. I really like the idea of the game, but I hate the guess work that is necessary to proceed and that you cannot advance until certain radio options are available. The game is very cryptic at what needs to be done and is unforgiving if you dont do exactly what you are supposed to do, or do it at a time the game did not foresee. E.g. it seems if you save at the wrong time the whole process can become stuck, but you are never told that you are waiting for a specific event to happen or what exactly is missing to trigger said event. The games concept, setting, voice acting and crash free experience would merit 4 stars, but what I consider game breaking bugs make it 2 - 3 stars only. I do not recommend a buy. Maybe further down the road this gets patched (This review was written on the 14. May 2021).

A Long Forgotten Profession Come To Life

if you ever had a family member in the armed forces circa 1960s to late 1980s,then this concept would be rather captivating to you: you play what was essentially the role of an Operations Officer in the cold war era: you mark a physical map with information about troop deployment, hostiles, places of note etc, updating your physical marks on the map the old fashioned way, whilst keeping in unreliable contact with your troops on the ground from the safety of a logistics tent:no GPS,aircraft cameras, spy drones or shoulder cams:just a long range miltary CB,a crudly drawn paper map of the operations theater and some sharpies to coordinate and keep track of it all. much like other games of its kind like say,tom clancy's endwar: you can even play the entire game using voice commands and a single button(albeit a little less reliably): i take personal pleasure in having a retro phone handset as my microphone and sound device, pressing the horn up to my ears and issuing commands as i go...its like the gaming peripheral i never knew i had but wish i never go without. that being said: the game's depiction of the vietnam war era seems a bit too campy, even by vietcong standards but, your just not going to find anything like this anywhere else and considering how well it depicts a long outdated form of miltary operations and essentially preserves it in interactive form: i cant help but higly recommending this.

Interesting idea but mediocre execution

A very interesting and unique take to strategy games in a setting thats underused. The narrative is surprisingly good for a game that has you staring at a map all day and can be rather tense while waiting for engagments to resolve. Unfortunately the game feels more like a puzzle than strategy and engagements feel like rng than anything else. Most of the time you're working with and against infantry so when you do get heavy assets it again feels like a puzzle on how you're supposed to use them to keep the infantry alive. Not being able to lose ANY units doesn't help. The dlc is also a neat idea that was porly implimented. Because the game is so short it feels like a waste of time to try and micromanage units, and again, since you're main asset is the 3 infantry units, promoting troops from other teams feels like a waste and really should have been in the base game. Overall, its a unique experience with a good narrative but could have been so much more.

Pretty good and unique experience

A unique approach to leading men. Overall it's fun with good idea and execution of being fully depended on getting radio reports from the field. Being forced to place markers on the map so that you know where is who, depending on reports. One thing that could use improvement is the area of allowing faster speed of speech. After a while, I've started hitting skip all the time. Not allowing speech to finish, since I was using text log to quickly get info than listening to speech to end. Felt kinda like cheating and killing immerison. But with listening to same text speech get stale. There is no difference in voice acting. As in nothing happening or being underfire the voice acting delivers identical calm speech.

Epic game

Pretty fun game if you like maps and radios >:D Can be a lil complex when first playing. But when you learn the mechanics its a good game! But I would suggest buying this game during the sale. Always buy your games on gog when they are on sale. NEVER pay full price.
