Mission Pack: Ground Zero

In the second official expansion pack for Quake II, you, and a few marines are the lucky ones. You've made it to the surface of Stroggos in one piece and are still able to contact the fleet. Worse than Quake 1 in every possible way

Everything about this game is worse than the first Quake. The combat is janky, the enemies are a mess, the level design is terrible, the plot and setting are banal, it somehow even looks worse despite the graphics being more advanced from a technical perspective, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the first game except for the name.

Total crap

The game launched better with the original CD and a crack. With GoG version, I don't even get to screen launch... Are you kidding me ?

No full screen

I didn't expect high resolution but I didn't expect forced windowed mode. Junk. Won't go into full screen even with Alt Enter key combinations. Third title over Christmas sale that's not worth my money. Not even a dollar.

Good only for the nostalgia value

I have many fond memories playing this game in our high school computer lab when we were supposed to be doing our keyboarding assignments. As we only had a spotty dial up connection where I lived, this game gave me my first taste of multiplayer gaming with Starcraft coming in second. So while this game does have a lot of nostalgia value for me, you'll notice I didn't give the game 5 stars like a lot of others would. Why? Because this wasn't a 5 star game then and it isn't now. First of all, in the single player game, enemy AI is terrible. They will suddenly duck.............in the open...........while you're filling their face with bullets. Not exactly stellar AI as it was advertised on the box. The weapons are nothing you haven't seen in any other FPS. In fact, the arsenal in Quake 2 is as textbook as it comes. The exception is instead of a melee weapon (though a chainsaw was added in the ground zero expansion pack), your starting pistol has infinite ammo. Nearly all the environments were an ugly yellowy brown, just look at the screenshots, most of the game has that colour setup. IIRC, the first Unreal was released about the same time as Quake 2 and the aesthetics of Unreal were much more pleasing. Even in the 90's, the PC game market was flooded with FPS's and I can't think of anything about Quake 2 that made it stand out from all the others. With dumb enemy AI you've seen before, weapons you've already seen before in ugly yellowy brown environments you probably haven't seen before, it's hard to recommend Quake 2. In a nutshell, this game only has value for 3 kinds of people. Those that want a trip down memory lane, those who are curious and those that simply must play every FPS in existence. If you aren't one of these 3 people, I'd give Quake 2 a miss. If you are, I would wait for a sale as I don't believe this title is worth $10 but that of course is your call.
