Razputin “Raz” Aquato, tra...
Razputin “Raz” Aquato, trained acrobat and powerful young psychic, has realized his lifelong dream of joining the international psychic espionage organization known as the Psychonauts! But these psychic super spies are in trouble. Their leader hasn't been the same since he was rescued from a kidnapping, and what's worse, there's a mole hiding in headquarters.
Combining quirky missions and mysterious conspiracies, Psychonauts 2 is a platform-adventure game with cinematic style and tons of customizable psychic powers. Psychonauts 2 serves up danger, excitement and laughs in equal measure as players guide Raz on a journey through the minds of friends and foes on a quest to defeat a murderous psychic villain.
Experience an imaginative, cinematic story that mixes humor and intrigue, brought to you by legendary game designer Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, Broken Age).
Explore unique environments using Raz’s ability to dive into people’s brains to battle their inner demons, unlock hidden memories, and resolve their emotional baggage.
Leap acrobatically through the air, traversing tightropes and trapezes in a varied, challenging, and joyful platforming experience.
Wield a powerful array of psychic powers to blast, burn and levitate things, or even slow down time itself to solve environmental puzzles and battle strange enemies.
The game narrative is very all over the place and it was hard to care for the plot. The levels are super diverse but also there is lack of structure about the way they make up the whole.
I was not looking forward to a sequel to a game that came out decades ago. What're the odds they'd capture the same spirit? Well, to my surprise, they did.
However, this game rivals a Kojima game in cutscene length. Often feeling like a movie broken up with dodgy platforming and somewhat bland combat.
I enjoyed my time with the first half and felt the game was a bit long in the second half. All of that said, this was well worth the $12 I paid for it!
Fun platforming, incredible visuals and a story that merges gameplay with writing that made me both laugh and cry.
But there are two things I have to warn about:
1. I have seen some people complain about the writing being confusing and that there is too much talking going on in this game. While I don't think that this is true, I do think that this game requieres at least some attention, media litteracy as well as basic media analysis skills to be fully enjoyed.
TL;DR: If you know what the word metaphor means and think that you could spot one, you're good to go.
2. Some of THE GAMERS™ might have a problem, because this game contains women in positions of power as well as sexual and racial minorities. This shouldn't really be a surprise, Psychonauts 1 already featured two of these three categories and, frankly, you shouldn't be surprised that games with a nuanced take on mental illness would also lean progressive in other areas of their writing.
If both of these points aren't an issue for you, than you should really play this game. At 15 to 20 hours of gameplay, Psychonauts 2 doesen't overstay its welcome while managing to justify its full price through the quality and artistry put on display.
