Delve into people's minds as Raz, a powerful young cadet at a psychic summer camp. While working on his merit badge in levitation, Raz discovers that someone is kidnapping psychic children and stealing their brains. To foil this evil plot and earn the title of Psychonaut, Raz must project himself into the mind of one bizarre character after another to battle their nightmares and inner demons. He does all this while continuing to earn psychic merit badges in subjects such as telekinesis, clairvoyance and fire-starting.
This amazing 3D platformer adventure, full of brilliant humor, trippy setting, and surreal action, became famous for its originality and excellence of design. If you're looking for a unique gaming experience, this is a fine pick. More than just fine, as a matter of fact--double fine!
A brilliant story that will not let go of you until you finish the game
An absolutely unique atmosphere with a psychedelical level design by Tim Schafer's famous Double Fine team
One of the greatest titles of the platformer genre
It's charming, intelligent and innovative. And if you have CECBE (Collect-Everything-Compulsory Behaviour Disorder) like me then you'll love it even more. It really set the standard for how 3D platformers should be made. I really don't have anything bad to say about it. Made by Tim Schafer's Double Fine, and while that might not be a garanteed seal of perfection THIS GAME has that seal.
Favourite level: The Milkman Conspiracy.
The story is incredible, and I loved the characters. It’s a great 3D platformer. The humor is very sharp and acid, and the visuals in some stages are out of this world. Each mind had different visual, rules, physics. I especially remember the physics in the Milkman level and the visuals in the Bullfighter level.
The only downside I can recall is that the gameplay and movement feel a bit clunky and stiff, especially when precision is required, like in the final stages. But for a game from 2005, it's totally acceptable.
While this game had a few memorable moments, very creative levels, on the whole it felt shallow story wise. If you are a Schafer fan for Grim Fandango, and not really into platformers, I don't think this will offer you as much as you'd hope for.
It surprisingly holds up great even now. The story itself is fairly basic, but there's fun world building and a whole lot of really unique characters. The animation is very solid and not stiff like one would expect from that era. Each mind you get to explore has a personal style themed to it and they explore wildly different ideas. Even some fun way of trying out your new powers with the scavenger hunt.
The only negative I have would be the mechanical side, movement and actions can feel clunky and not always working properly. And the audio quality not being fully consistent with some voice lines.
It will be interesting to see the improvements made in Psychonauts 2. You can really feel that this game was made with love and dedication, it oozes charm.
