Project Wingman
Description
Project Wingman is a combat flight action game with an emphasis on polished and refined gameplay, true-to-its-roots inspirations, and an engaging single player experience. Perfect for those who aren't looking for a simulator experience, with the ease of pick up and play, all the way to those who want a fast-paced challenging flight action game.
Dogfight, strike, and fly through combat zones based off an alternate history of Earth. Either over the cold waters of the Bering Strait, attacking tanks in the brutal environments of Yellowstone magma fields, or diving through the Redwoods to strike targets of opportunity in the Pacific Northwest, across the oceans, above the scarred lands of the world, this war will take you from exotic battlefield to exotic battlefield, all while going up against odds way above your pay grade.
Pure Combat Flight Action
Exotic weaponries such as railguns and geothermal-powered armaments will be ready to pluck you out of the sky if you're careless. Whether you are an attack aircraft pilot, skimming the ground with a gatling gun and rocket launchers attached to your wing, or an interceptor with long range, almost sniper-like missiles at your disposal, it will be up to you to prove yourself as an Ace pilot.
Conquest Mode
In Conquest Mode, fight in an uphill battle against various bosses and ace squadrons in a territory capture game, drawing elements from roguelikes and RPGs. Players will have to earn enough money to not only purchase new aircraft, but build a mercenary army of their own in order to take on waves of increasingly difficult opposition as they struggle to take on a myriad of changing missions.
Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality headsets will work in-game to put the player in the cockpit of aerial warfare, immersing themselves in head-swiveling combat. Combine this with full compatibility with HOTAS peripherals and custom axis curves, and you will be able to experience the game however you want, using any DirectInput supported peripheral you like.

Nice game, but very frustrating
The game overall is nice. Especially the flying and the combat feels really good, in some occurrences I think it's deeper than Ace Combat. However, where it fails miserably (and the reason for 3 stars) is level design: there are ENORMOUS amount of enemies and with how the AI behaves, you are essentially forced to clear the area of trash mobs and taking over the more interesting targets afterward. You are free not to do that, but a mission can easily take 40 minutes due to the amount of targets you are assigned and there are no checkpoints. So yeah, one mistake and you'll need to restart from scratch, which is extremely frustrating. I love what they have done, but halving the target in each mission would have done good to this game.

meh..
I was very irritated trying to get this to work properly with VR. It seems tacked on half A**ED. It let's you configure SOME of the keys. It's like they figure everyone with a VR system sits at their desk and keyboard. Compounded I couldn't select any menu options unless I toggle my desktop view and use the mouse pointer instead of the Index controllers. Once I selected the difficulty and aircraft I was dropped in a menu that shows my hard-points..... and a back button? If I select the empty hard-point I then go to a menu where I am supposed to select a weapon or something for this hard-point (I assume)... But I can't as there is nothing available to select... but there is a LAUNCH button in this menu for some reason.... ??????? I was flying LOW into and ran into a tree... I stopped... Literally suspended by the tree... It sounded like I was rapidly going back and forth.. I pulled back on my stick and once I was at an appropriate angle I was released by the tree and I was once again flying.

Alright
Pros: Keyboard controls are pretty good Graphics are better than Ace Combat 7 (I have yet to see a pop in texture) Large varity of planes to use Ace dog fights are proper fights (Hard but not impossible) Story mode (Story mode is not all that interesting, but at least it has one) Conquest mode (Pretty fun, when you just want to shoot down everything and the kitchen sink) Control support (For me, I had to use a 3rd party program to get my controller to work) Has VR support Cons: No Checkpoints (Get shot down, crash into ground/plane/mountain, or shoot down a non combatant you are put in the game over screen and only have retry or quit to menu options availible; Retry will result in starting the entire level over, no getting back into combat with an Ace) Level design (Sometimes you have to Luke Skywalker some objectives) Enemy (Enemy reaction is poor, they do not react to friendlies being shot down, or do not try to engage you when you are chasing) Allies (Hardly take down anything on their own, does not feel like they do anything impactful, during Ace dog fights it is usually you versus everyone) Changes I recommend (Might change my review if they are ever implimented) Checkpoints (For after completing 1st objective and have to shift into fighting Aces) (Highly Recommend Add Dog fight mode (For people that just want to have a dog fight with Aces from the Story mode) (Highly Recommend) Enemy react to fallen enemy allies being shot down Allies being able to go toe to toe with enemy Aces (So instead of feeling like a 1v8 it can feel like a 4v4) Allies can do maneuvers like the bait and switch (Have enemy chase them and have you shoot down the enemy) (Put it on a cool down if this would become an issue) In the end I highly recommend this game I still would like to have this game make these changes to make the game even better and allow me to change my review.
