There are a few different modes in Project Hospital:
Tutorial levels will guide your through the basics of treating patients and running hospitals.
Sandbox mode offers endless hours of content, building anything from small clinics to huge multi-storey hospitals, starting from scratch or in one of pre-built hospitals or clinics in case you want to jump straight into management. Run you own ambulance service and help handle events and emergencies.
The campaign will put you in the shoes of a crisis manager trying to save a few hospitals in critical state.
6 challenge levels will test your skills and let you focus on the intricate details of individual specialized departments.
As said by others, ignore the old outdated reviews. The game is well flowing, the DLC are cheap and add new angles to your hospitals. The sandbox mode is what I have spent most time in so far, and I must say it has been a very relaxing experience.
I normally play Paradox games and such, the type of games that you enjoy but exhaust you if played long.
Project Hospital keeps me equally entertained and at the same times relaxed. I can absolutely recommend this game.
The previous reviews will tell you that the game is unfinished and not functional. This might have been true for 2018, but is not the case today.
I have bought the game in 2019 and faced only minor bugs (i.e. structures could not be deleted). Today, I don't encounter any bugs at all while playing and I have played this game for more than 50 hours so far.
The game is not like theme hospital, it is a serious hospital simulator. You can build rooms, hire staff and let them do their job. But you can also control every step of diagnostics and treatment yourself, for a single patient, some patients or even all patients with a different degree of difficulty (that's the free doctor mode DLC).
I like this game very much and in my opinion, it is even worth the full price! The only downside is the UI that is not always self-explaining, so I strongly recommend to play the tutorial first!
Somehow I've played this for a crazy number of hours in the last year, without even realizing it. It's a really fun and challenging simulation game, which makes you not only the builder of the hospital but the overseer of all the patients as well. If you leave all your doctors to their own devices all of the time, you won't make money or have a high patient turnover. The design seems simplistic, and in some ways it is, but as far as management goes, there is a lot to consider. It took me several tries to find an efficient way of planning my hospital, in order to not have patients die from neglect or have my staff take too long transporting or otherwise. I still have a long way to go. I recommend doing a little bit of IRL research as to how hospitals are built, because it will help you succeed. As opposed to most sims where it's just a design by theme, this sim really takes into account the urgency and efficiency of a working hospital.
The only things I would like to see "improve" (not because of gameplay, but more just a personal want) is more variation of people and buildable items. Also, after a while, symptoms and diseases become slightly predictable, but I suppose maybe that's done on purpose. I would also enjoy a glossary of tests available so I can understand why I should run certain tests and not others, because sometimes I just run things for the heck of it. I don't know *exactly* what the difference between an MRI and a CT scan are, just that they find anomalies differently somehow. That's just one example though--there are TONS of tests the labs can run, and I really don't know what half of them are. So, more clarification on that would be nice.
tl;dr: Really fun and detailed game. Don't expect it to be easy.
The game needs a serious reworking of its UI/UX. Tutorial 3, for instance, requires people to look things up outside of the game because it doesn't give you sufficient information for a goal. The game will warn you when someone has something your hospital can't treat, but good luck in figuring out how to get there. Perhaps you need a new piece of equipment, a doctor with a skill you don't have covered, or an entirely new ward? There's no way to tell. Menus are a mess, and there are a lot of them. The game might be better if the "ward" or "unit" system were eliminated and the hospital were treated as a whole.
And then there's the first scenario. It pushes you in, way too deep, with a giant functioning hospital with all sorts of elements you've never seen before and your goal is to make it make money and more efficient. No curve to ease into it at all.
Really good game of micro managment and customisation. Updates are bringing more and more stability and bugfixes along with some new content. You can easily spend dozens of hours trying to optimizing any part of the hospital.
Good points are :
- run smoothly on a little CG (here mac mini 2014 with Intel CG)
- deep managment of each part of an hospital
- smooth learn curve (many retry to find right solution to the right problem)
- nice animations (but still a bit rigid)
- really good documentation about diseases, really realistic
Some points to work on (from my point of view) :
- keyboard shorcuts are not fully working on MacOS : no selection of a department, no rotating camera, no way to set custom shorcuts
- not possible to move a room where some employee has a computer attached to, that's really not confortable to build plans
- some weird path finding, by example, a patient goes to another automatic food machine though there is one just in the waiting room he's waiting in
- some patients have no problems but wait anyway
- colors choice is really short, more colors would be great
