Description

Fight overwhelming odds to escape a secret TranStar moon base where the enemies you encounter, the hazards you face, the goals you complete, and the loot you collect are different each time you play. With changing environments as dangerous as they are dynamic, the Mooncrash campaign for Prey will offer a fun, infinitely replayable challenge to test even the most skilled players.

Story:

In Prey: Mooncrash, TranStar’s secret moon base stopped transmitting shortly after the events of Prey. Now Peter, a hacker stationed aboard a spy satellite tasked with intercepting TranStar communications, must find out why. Trapped and under a ruthless contract with KASMA Corp, Peter’s only hope of ever seeing his family again is uncovering the moon base’s lost secrets.

Features:

  • Live. Die. Adapt. Escape!
Escape TranStar’s moon base before the Typhon threat takes over. A simple goal, but one with hundreds of viable solutions. In Mooncrash, players will experience an all-new, infinitely replayable, ‘rogue-lite’ campaign with ever-changing enemies, weapons and objectives against a constantly increasing alien threat.
  • Survive How You Want with Who You Want
Unlock multiple characters as you play, each with their own set of specialized, upgradable skills. Will you forge your path with the resourceful engineer Joan, trade that wrench in for Security Officer Bhatia and his shotgun, or will you choose the frail-but-gifted Andrius and his arsenal of psychic abilities? Prey is about choices, and those choices belong to you.
  • Search for Secrets, Loot…and a Way Off
Arkane Studios’ talent for detail and story-rich environments comes alive in Mooncrash. As you explore the station, which is the same size and scope of four levels of the original game’s Talos I station, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for precious supplies – and, of course, Mimics.
  • New Challenges, New Solutions
The Typhon threat has returned with familiar foes and tough new enemies, each armed with a unique set of deadly characteristics. Use the full power of the arsenal at your disposal, including popular weapons and abilities from Prey’s main game, to fight for your life and make a mad dash for your escape.

"And now I've found my way to hell..."

If you liked Prey and you're not the type to give up easily then you should definitely try out Mooncrash. This is a roguelike version of Prey, you'll be visiting the same places over and over (well, actually not that much) to complete story objectives and escape Pytheas moon base with 5 playable characters. After each simulation reset (game takes place inside Kasma corp [rivals of Transtar] simulation) locations change a bit, e.g new hazards emerge, different enemies appear, loot is getting randomly generated etc. Some say that this DLC is unfair or too difficult, but I can't agree - it runs on the same rules as Prey, nothing will surprise you here (except for 1 new enemy, slightly modified Nightmare). Only real differences are the timer (the more time you spend inside the simulation the more dangerous it becomes, but you can easily slow down the clock with consumables) and lack of manual saves (only autosaves). Mooncrash can definitely be a challenge, but beating the game is very satisfying. I can't say that this DLC is as good as the main game, but it's still pretty fun!

Just RESET

While the game is somewhat fundamentally different to the main game in terms of progress, I guess many of the disappointed reviewers played the game unnecessarily wrong. I found it really entertaining and fun. The answer is: RESET, there are buttons for that. Somebody died? Who cares, RESET. Finished a quest? Don't like the current run layout? No more neuromods around? Your only shotgun just broke? Just RESET. I've never even made it into L4 corruption by being slow, no need to beat that or, mostly, continue the same sim with new avatar. Just look for neuromods (and use them!), blueprints and get some sim points (beat enemies, escape, collect valuables ...), so you restart even stronger, and buy some better equipment. The fun point is: You will find a way to ignore everything tedious. Hindered by a gate? Pff, if *SPOILER*. Door is broken? Well, *SPOILER*. Not finding the item? Tram station offline? You should have discovered that *SPOILER*. And even if the game gets new challenges over time, you'll be starting to play the game, not the other way round. Some tasks really may require some planning since sometimes there is a little dependency between the skills of your avatars, but that's by no means difficult. And there even is a little story and some more background to the main game. Anyway, as in some Souls games, you may face to do things over and over again, but pay attention to the map, the hotspots, the randomness, the skill trees and cash-out every run as good as possible without hestitating to RESET. The final quest may even turn out to be the easiest run if you've done well so far. Definitely worth the buy, as much as the main game.

What DLCs should aim for

I love what Mooncrash is. It takes building blocks of what a pretty darn great SystemShock inspired Immersiv Sim and reimagines it into something else: a rogue-lite. It is not "more Prey", it is a new, very interesting thing, build using Prey's bones. Challenge before you is to escape from an overrun by Typhon Moonbase with 5 escapees - each of them a class of it's own, with skills from the base game spread amond them providing some varied toolsets. Not immediately, of course. As you progress you unlock each of those escapees, but also game's systems are layered on top of each other - game gets more difficult the more time you spend in the simulation, and more and more hazards are introduced. While levels stay the same, Prey's deep systems allow for procedural generation of obstacles - that's where the 5 character run come into play, as you need to plan ahead to succeed. As different characters provide different skillsets (engineer can fix stuff, opening new paths for example) you will have to analyze the layout of the hazards and plan accordingly. A word of warning - it takes a while for the DLC to really click. As the game tries to ease you into it's systems it take a while before it introduces all it has to offer. A road to that point is not unenjoyable, but as it is likely like nothing you played before, it also takes a while to really engage with the game (and for it to show its teeth). Also playing base game Prey is also highly recommended, as the DLC relies on pre-established knowledge. As such you kinda need to enjoy both what the base Prey and DLC do, to enjoy both experiences.

If you liked Prey, stay away!

This shares only the graphics and the name with Prey. Otherwise it's a Roguelike. If you like dying, you might enjoy this. But if you expect an immersive game like Prey was, you'll be sorely disappointed. This game never lets you forget that it's only a simulation. You play as various meaningless characters. Their story feels pointless and they/you keep dying a lot. That's part of the intentionally frustrating game design. Apart from the joy of repeatedly dying, the game also offers a lot of repetition. So, instead of the excitement, well crafted story and immersion of Prey, you get boredom and frustration in equal parts with Mooncrash. For full disclosure: I didn't finish it. I wasted a few hours on it and then uninstalled it.

Interesting

A really cool DLC with interesting ideas; the "rogue-lite" approach to an immersive sim was something I personally never encountered before, so it was a refreshing experience
