victim of 3D Hype
Populous 2 was perfect for me, but this one made me only fight with the user interface. Getting and keeping an overview is much harder in this tiny ball of a world, compared to the isometric view or any other game. Only a tiny fraction of the world is visible at a time, and most of it is hidden by some hill or the camera angle. In previous populous titles, there was some easy grid to coordinate my build actions with, not here. Although repetetive, I enjoyed raising and lowering ground in Populous1&2 and a good deal of the gameplay was influenced by it; size of houses, paths from&to the enemy, protection from floods etc.. All gone or ruined in this title. Thus it is not really a sequel but an experiment in early 3D, with only few elements from other earlier titles - in an entirely different genre if I judge by the atmosphere, user interface and gamemechanics. Maybe RTS. The idea of the ball world, which abandons the slightly anoying borders of flat maps is intruiging. But in this size, implementation and with this user interface, for me a disappointing and horribly frustrating dead end.
