POD Gold is an old game. That's why I looked it up on PCGamingWiki to get it working properly. I was hoping that Podhacks could fix most of the issues. Sadly it didn't work and the game stays rather unplayable in this released state.
I remember playing this at school in the IT lab. This game did have a story. It was about You racing to win the last of the escape shuttles to get off the diseased virus pplanet, Of course the disease/virus being called POD. Essentially something happend, And you're the last few trying to get off the planet, but only one ship remains.
Was fun and had a satisfying end.
Can't join in the chorus of 5 stars. I played POD first in 2000 and it hadn't aged well even back than. Creative tracks? Okay, I admit there is quite a lot of diversity. But hardly any does offer the fluidity or design of virtually any NFS II course. Individual cars? Well there is wide range of often arbitrary formed lumps and you might invest a given number of points in any of five aspects which define the performance. Without any speciality - same configuration, same gamplay, no matter what shape your lump has. And keep in mind that most onesided configurations won't stand a chance and that very small changes might define a "new" car, but will not give you a noticeably different feel of driving. E.g. Dethkarz offers easily as much diversity as POD despite having only four fixed car styles. And PODs driving modell is even simpler than in most other mid 90s arcade racers (including such "pearls" as Ignition)
What's left on the pro-POD list? Some like the athmosphere and sound. Which is a matter of taste - I get nothing from it. Often mentioned as well are the graphics and yes: They are the reason why anyone remembers this game. Most types of 3D decelerators? MMX? POD was always in front regarding support for new hardware and thus offered some of the best effects of 1996. Keep in mind that this means it did look fresher than preceding 2D opponents, noticeable worse than anything from 1997 and was completey wiped out by 1998 when studios got the hang of 3D acceleration. And unlike the charme of some sprite based non-action games there is nostalgia in a game attempting "realistic" 3D rendering.
