Pirates! Gold Plus

This is the same game I remember playing back in the 90s. It is awesome. I've got dozens of hours on the GOG version, racked up before I installed Galaxy. I'm anxious to see if the cloud save really works. Now for the gotchas... the keyboard is almost non-responsive to steer ship during combat. USE YOUR MOUSE BUTTONS TO STEER... left click to steer left, right click to steer right. CANNONS MISSING? You need to make sure you answer the question correctly when asked to identify a pirate flag. Look in the manual or the flags.pdf in the install directory. This was used as old school copy protection back in the day. A lot of MicroProse games used a similar copy protection strategy. If you don't identify the flag correctly you should quit and reload the game.

I could not possibly count the hours spent on these titles ! Pulling all-nighters crossing the Spanish Main, plundering gold from both enemies and friends alike, finding lost relatives, and collecting grand treasuries. You are a pirate/privateer on service of one of the great nations of the time (England, Spain, Portugal or Netherlands) or just in service of your own. Nations wage war and as a privateer you are allowed to attack and plunder enemy ships. Or you can attack everybody, but pissing everybody off is generally not a good idea, since getting fresh crew will become a bit difficult. In the course of your daring exploits you will come across maps of grand treasures, lost relatives and all kind of stuff to make the game the grand entertainment it actually is. :) "Fly our flag, we teach them fear Capture them, the end is near Firing guns, they shall burn Surrender or fight, there is no return Under Jolly Roger !!!" ;)

Pirates is certainly one of the best game of all times. HOWEVER the conversion of this game by GOG is extremely bad (on MAC - I do not know about PC versions). Controls are not responding... extremely slow to respond, which makes the game almost not playable. Furthermore, the game seems to be so demanding in terms of resources (...) that it managed to make my MacBook Pro extremely warm - more demanding than a FPS - this a joke. My advise: do NOT buy the MAC version of the game (again - maybe the PC version is well translated). I am a bit annoyed as I was expecting a perfect conversion for such an old game sold at about 6 USD.

I remember playing the Commodore 64 version of this game back in 87 and I got to tell you. I LOST ALOT OF SLEEP PLAYING IT! I would start playing 6 pm in the evening and at 3 am I would literally had to pry myself from my computer to get what little sleep I could get before I resume playing again the next evening. ( I still had to go to school the next morning, heh.) But by then I would've already have raided more that have of all the ports in the Spanish Main and sank enough ships to have my own alcoholic beverage named after me.

I used to play this game on Commodore 64 in 1986, the graphics was, when compared the games of its era, fantastic, musics, the best I have heard in Commodore, the world you play in was real world with real and living cities. When you are in a town you can ask the bartender in an inn to get the latest news. Sometimes about a gold vein found in a city, which leads population and wealth boom. Sometimes femine hits a city. Sometimes countries goes to war. and sometimes they make peace. Cities can be captured by enemy countries during the war, you can also help your nation capture towns by raiding them. And ofcourse you can slowly climb the ranks of your choosen countries navvy, gaining land and reputaiton on the way. And with luck you can marry the daughter of the mayor. There are two fleets of Spaniards, Tressure Fleet and Silver Train. If you know in which date in which city they will be in you can track them down for extra gold and the best in game ship, galleon. All in 64kb Ram. This is a classic, may be the best game of Sid Meier.
