Description
Please Note: The base-game, Pillars of Eternity, is required to play.

Pillars of Eternity: The White March - Part I is a large sprawling expansion pack with hours of gameplay integrated into the main adventure. Along with the new quests and area content, the team at Obsidian continues to support and make improvements to the entire game, including the additions of Player Party AI and Enhanced Enemy AI. Even if you haven't played Pillars of Eternity, now is a great time to jump in and experience the hardcore classic RPG with The White March - Part I.
  • Raised level cap: Your party of six adventurers can now progress beyond level 12 to 14. The additional levels add powerful new spells, abilities and talents for all 11 classes.
  • New areas to explore: Largely focused on the snowy environments inspired by Icewind Dale, the expansion will feature a new quest hub, and many additional quests and dungeons.
  • Soulbound weapons: The expansion features mighty artifacts that grow stronger over time. These weapons gain different powers and attributes depending on the character class that binds to it.
  • New companions: Part 1 of the expansion introduces two new companions you will be able to use throughout all of your adventures. The Devil of Caroc, a rogue, and Zahua, a monk, will be available to join you on your quest in The White March and will travel back with you into the base game.
  • Multi-class talents: Classes will now have additional options to diversify and take on some of the abilities of other classes.
  • Party AI: Now you will have the option to set AI scripts for your party, allowing you to focus on controlling the characters you care about most.
  • Enhanced Enemy AI: Enemies and monsters are now smarter than ever. The new AI makes the entire game more of a challenge, and spell casters will use a wider variety of their spells in more devastating ways.
  • Respec: At any inn or tavern the player can re-level their party members. It gives flexibility for the player to experiment with the RPG systems and try out builds with the newly added multi-class talents. If you aren't completely satisfied with your character, you can now do a rebuild and start over fresh.

More of the same

Let me start off by saying that this expansion won't change your mind on Pillars of Eternity. It fixes some problems, like adding more interesting loot into the game, but that's about it. When it comes to storytelling, quests and exploration, it's just about the same thing, on the same level of quality. So if you loved Pillars of Eternity like I did, you will love this expansion Side quests are all good save for bounty missions, in the fine tradition set by the original game starting off with a fantasy trope and then finding some sort of twist on it. Main storyline doesn't hold a candle to the main storyline of the main game - but it's very good nonetheless, and in spite of the name, it's actually finished at the end, with a strong hint on future events. The biggest mechanical change are scripted interactions, which give you a good deal more options this time around. Finishing the White March area itself will take you about 13 hours while doing all the side stuff + the expansion also adds a new high level area to Dyrwood, about 2 hours long. You may enter White March area with either a group of about level 7, or lvl12 and the expansion will ask you whether you'd like to scale the content to high level. While it is preferrable to go trough with a low level group, you will only miss very little when you don't. The only major mechanic added by the game are soulbound weapons - pieces of equipment that you can bind to certain classes, and those weapons will then give you tasks you need to fulfill to level them up and give the bound characters relevant new abilities with a little tidbit of story related to the weapon. The tasks can be a quest or just minor things like "Deal 500 shock damage". After finishing the expansion contet, I got all my characters to max level, and all the new talents they unlocked on lvl 13 were actually very nice - like the ability to summon two clones of himself for monk. Per rest magic users also get lvl3 spells per encounter.

Great! But buy both expansions at once.

If you liked Pillars of Eternity, you will like the expansions. If you didn't like it, then obviously don't go buying even more of it; that's silly. However, I recommend you buy BOTH expansions at once, since they are really two halves of one story. For example, if you buy only Part 1, you will get the companion Zahua but you won't be able to do his quest line or see how his story turns out. Go here to get both expansions bundled: https://www.gog.com/game/pillars_of_eternity_the_white_march_expansion_pass

Warning 64 BIT

I wrote a review for Pillars after playing it for a while on my 32 bit computer. I gave it 2 stars because it was crashing to desktop 2 to 3 times an hour. Since then I have been playing on my 64 bit computer and haven't had the first crash. I can understand how people can compare it to Baldur's Gate as the game is in the same style but that's where the similarities end. Pillars is a better game by leaps and bounds! I hadn't played BG when it first came out so I have no nostalgic ties, as a matter of fact I only played it for the first time earlier last year. To call Pillars shallow in comparison is a blindly biased statement, the repeated dumb statements about a wife in BG got old fast where Pillars story, side quests and NPC quests continue to branch and progress. There is no way to update reviews on GOG and no way to see most recent reviews any more. The most popular will always be on the top and my last review is on page 11 of 20 some odd reviews, so I write this review for all Pillars and the added content to inform about compatibility. You can play on a 32 bit machine if you don't mind the crashes but Pillars of Eternity should be listed as 64 BIT ONLY.

Good addition to the main game

Pretty good expansion with more stuff: more great locations to explore, more side stories and characters, more items and so on. The overall quality is good, with combat being the weakest point in my opinion. Still, I would recommend the expansion to anyone who enjoyed the main game.

Good addon

A good addon for a great game; basically more of the same (in a very good sense) but with snow.
