Great RPG skilling system yet..

I really like isometric RPG´s as they often combine engaging storytelling with good gameplay. They often intervine story with gameplay.I was really into pillars of eternity at the start and i still like it. But in retrospect it has some issues that really kill it for me being as one of my favorite games. My favorite part is the whole RPG system template that the game brought you. Unlike baldurs gate and co. you dont have dump stats that you never need. Intelligence can be really useful for a berserker as it increases his aoe spells and so on. There are enough classes and lots of ways to experiment with. While the equipment system is basically the same as in baldurs gate except you can upgrade your weapons yourself with ingredients. I often found myself not finding any tough and having so much money not knowing what to do with it. Also there is so much junk equipment you will basically drown in ingredients and equipment you have no use for. The game offers lots of useless spells aswell. You dont have to play the game twice to see many spells that just completely exceed in contrast to other. The story itself tries to be really edgy and grim dark. And i like it. It does work and offers some great world and character building. You compagnions are all interestening with lots of story arcs. But there are sadly only 1 compagnion for each class in the game and some are even locked behind DLC. Dialogue itself is important and written really well here.Sometimes you dont know if people tell you fairy tales or if they describe true historic events. Its great. If the game just doesnt overwhelm you with it. Really i personally hated how one person can suddenly talk a pages long of story. Despite being someone who reads all the books in baldurs gate. Overall i can recommend the game but there are clearly tons of issues with the game as much as i liked the great skilling system and the writing, there is just so much wasted potential in this game. 3.5/5 Decent game

Disappointing Heir to Infinity Engine

I have played my fair share of Black Isle titles to completion, some with greater satisfaction than others (Fallout I and II, Baldur's Gate I and II, Icewind Dale I and II). On the whole, I would rate those experiences positively. Of course there are difficult character-building choices, tactical choices in battle, in addition ot the role-playing, but such is par for the course. I looked forward to experiencing this most recent generation's homage to the isometric RPGs of yesteryear. The world-building and pace of narrative are serviceable; even though the early game is rather scripted, it's done in a manner that encourages exploration, and foreshadows the freedom later available to the player. A majority of party NPCs have motivations that fit the context and interesting personalities. While I have not enjoyed their subpar class builds, I have enjoyed from the traveling banter. Alas, playing this game years after release, even the strenuous and continued efforts of modders cannot fix some of glaringly terrible design decisions made by game developers. I should not need to read countless pages devoted to untangling the opacity of the Caed Nua Keep mechanics; not for such a thematically central component to the game. The management of the abode, and all the dependent sub-systems almost immediately grinds the pace of the game to a halt. Although I desire a conclusion to this narrative, my experience has made me ill-disposed to try another of Obsidian's more recent offerings, especially any promising Infinity Engine nostalgia.

Great RPG, engaging world

Obsidian easily wrights the most charming and engaging dialogue in the industry. It's especially true of this game. For something crowdsourced, it's especially impressive. A great time.

Not impressed

The class balance is horrible. The build options are very limited. The plot is predictable and eye-rollingly boring. The prefab companions are terrible in stats/build as well as personality (most). I see this game as an attempt to recreate the magic of Baldur's Gate/2 without any of the inspiration, balance, and general awesomeness that made those games worthy. One star because A) I can't give it zero stars and B) it's stable and there aren't many bugs.

A fovorite

I loved this game. I understand it surely isn't perfect, a lot of thing could be improved but I just liked it. It gave me the feeling of the old rpgs though of course it is different. I liked the story though it was a bit confusing in the beginning. I loved the dlcs, I think they are well made. It made me really excited to play PoE2.
