Phoning Home is an open-world game of exploration and survival set on a strange, alien planet. It tells the story of two robots – ION and ANI – and their life-defining journey.
You play ION, a young exploration unit on a mission to secure natural resources. When you crash-land on an alien planet your ship is almost completely destroyed. Not only do you have to survive in a strange new world full of dangers, but to have even a hope of escape you must find a way to contact your home planet for help.
With only your ship’s A.I. for company, you set out to explore your new home. On your journey you encounter ANI, a small, stranded service unit who identifies as female. ANI is the first to admit she’s a bit mad, but she is also a valuable resource, and it soon becomes clear that there will be no escape without her.
And so, the two of you begin a journey that neither of you is prepared for, on a planet where even the laws of nature seem not to apply. A journey in which ION and ANI must face the strangest of all possible challenges if they are to have any hope of living to tell their own story.
Explore a new frontier. Large open environments with realistic environmental effects – from time-of-day lighting to dappled forests and snow-covered mountains, to volcanoes, canyons, deep oceans and scorching deserts – you must find your way.
Experience a story with living (but not breathing) characters, brought to life by voice actors.
Survive harsh weather conditions and temperatures – and protect ANI at all costs!
An intriguing mix of exploration, logic and action gameplay.
Create portals to traverse the landscape.
Fight – or find ways to avoid combat.
Craft improvements and critical tools from resources found in the environment.
Discover the remnants of an alien civilization, decrypt their language and restore their technology.
Enjoy a beautiful soundtrack.

A small lovely adventure game with gathering resources for repairs and finding way home after having plain crash, roleplaying a robot and his connetion to other robots. It reminded me a bit of subnautica but more simple skills/upgrades/tools unlocks and more led by narrative voice and without building mechanics. And with realistic graphics.
I have played 3 hours (according to some playthrough it should be around 1/3rd of the game) and I was still waiting for the bugs and borderom mentioned in reviews here, pinned as the most helpful, which were reason I didn't buy this game for higher price, and it didn't arrive.
Things like that are really sad for me.
This is definitely not a game for everyone. I would strongly advise to watch some gameplay clips to get a feeling of what you're getting into.
I found it rather enjoying. It's a very calm and simple experience. Most of the time you are going to explore the planet you landed on, collecting resources and doing very basic tasks. Don't expect some grand set-pieces or deep combat mechanics. That's not what the game is.
At it's heart it's an exploration game with very light survival mechanics - resource hunting and crafting. I say very light cause there is an abundance of resources all around you. You really shouldn't have any issues with finding what you need. In fact I was almost always full on most of the crafting materials. Don't worry about the "combat" either. You can really only fight one type of enemy - the wirls. The rest you have to avoid, easy. Haven't died a single time during my playthrough. Just keep an eye on your fuel level, energy level and health and you'll be fine.
Let's talk about ANI.. Gonna be frank - she is F'ing annoying. At first I found her musings on how it would be like to be a life-form from a perspective of a machine somehow interesting. It got old pretty fast. And then you add the fact "she" does have a tendency of nagging you during the game. Srsly devs, why ? Worse yet, as I have already said, you have to take care of ANI's health, give her anti-corrosion plates, keep "her" clear of sand storms, blizzards and rain and you have to literally carry her during platforming segments cause she can't even jump from a small rock.. Why ? Why put an inept robot to drag the player down ? Why not give ANI some unique abilities and the option to switch between ION and ANI ?
What I really did like was the soundtrack. It is really good and suits the game's setting very nicely. I've even downloaded a few of the tracks and added them to my day-to-day listening collection.
So to sum up - a nice and simple game with an annoying element. There you go :)
God story with crafting and gathering, well developed npc characters. So you feel yourself as a part of some sci-fi sitcom. After full story completing you don't want to run this game again. However it is good for 5-7 hours of interesting relax which sometimes much better then modern movies. And you get to know why it is better to have been never married.
bought this game a while ago, never really got around to playing it until now and WOW it did not disappoint.
the story is new but good, the world is beautiful, pretty much normal size but the dessert world is big and I mean big and fun to explore. Although there is a slight touch of feminist ideology, it is very slight, and does not really interfere with the story line or game play, the characters grow on you with the game and I personally quite enjoyed them. the game is a survival story driven narrative kind of game with some very interesting mechanics, creative world environment and enjoyable characters. I really loved this game, and am so sad that I finally reached the end of the game. only con to this game a few bugs here and there but nothing serious, make sure you save often.
