So nice

Played this one a while ago. Nice to finally see it on GOG. It was a pleasantly colorful adventure that goes on for quite a while (took me about 70 hours to collect all the items). People who played the Flash game know what to expect, but there's a whole lot more to see and do in this one still. I had fun exploring and solving puzzles, though the fighting and platforming took some getting used to. Going after the optional stuff provides a nice sense of accomplishment - you get better gear, handy shortcuts and snippets of the story (which I hope gets a continuation soon). The various locations you find are rather pretty, too. The game is mostly lighthearted, but it does get emotional, and it does get challenging, especially the optional areas. You can customize the difficulty if you're struggling, though. Overall it's a very nice package which I enjoyed quite a lot.

It's Got What Humans Crave.

Over the course of a few days I cobbled together some thoughts about this game, the first one I ever felt compelled to post a review of on GOG...turns out, it was a few thousand words too long for this site. As such, I'll offer an abridged handful of things you might want to note about my experience with Phoenotopia Awakening: - I am not a person who tends to enjoy games that get frustrating. - Phoenotopia Awakening had me raging more than any other title I've played in recent memory. - I still finished the game. - My final stats were over 70 hours played and a 97 percent completion rate. - Upon finishing up I immediately sought out and played the original Phoenotopia Flash game as well. - The vast majority of my time with Awakening was actually on Steam; my GOG purchase was a day-one double-dip. If you're interested in the original, more complete account of how all of this came to pass, I posted that at the following location: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198109626876/recommended/1436590/ Long story short: not everyone is going to be able to get into this one, but if this game's proverbial bug bites you you're not going to be able to tear yourself away: try it, and if you decide to keep it you will absolutely be getting more than your money's worth. It isn't perfect, but it is undoubtedly something special.

Charming, great story, tons of content

If you want to find everything, expect to play for upwards of 50 hours. I suppose all the health/stamina upgrades are optional, even though you'll them, but it also has hidden/optional equipment, abilities, and lore. I suspect if you tried to run through the game seeing as little as possible, on a first playthrough you'd easily still get more than 15 hours (the typical length of a metroidvania) out of it. The combat is more hardcore than you would expect given how cutesy the game looks. For example, one of the common complaints I've seen is that your basic attack has short range which isn't increased with upgrades. But you'll learn that most enemies don't inflict contact damage, meaning you can stand inside their sprite. Another example, one personal gripe with the combat is that you get knocked and bounced around like a pinball, which sometimes makes me rage, but this can be mitigated somewhat through the robust 'accessibility' (difficulty) options which also let you drastically reduce the severity of stamina management among other mechanics. Additionally, you can 'tech' when you hit the ground at the right moment, although I find this hard to do. The bottom line is the the skill ceiling is higher than you expect. I can't emphasize enough how charming the game is. You'll become attached to the characters. The setting is interesting, and full of surprises. There are hundreds of NPCs with amusing and heartwarming dialogue. There are dozens of food items (your healing items), with no particular reason to use most of them over another, it's just pure enjoyment. There are in-game achievements, each of which reward you with concept art once you've finished the game. Collectibles are constantly rewarding, as they're tied to upgrades. (There's also a fortune teller NPC who will give you a clue for every collectible for a modest fee.) Just remember to keep notes of places where you can't go and will need to backtrack.

If You're Looking for a...

If all you're looking for is just a Metroidvania or a side-scrolling action RPG with platforming, Phoenotopia Awakening is certainly that - and that's why I bought it. If you've played a few of the aforementioned types of games before, you will, for the most part, find more of the same, here. It definitely takes some queues from Zelda II: The Adventures of Link, what with the overworld map, and enemy symbols that randomly appear, chase you, and when you touch them, you enter a side-scrolling style "level" and end up either having to fight them, or escape. You might find the combat clunky, as it seems your attack swing is rather delayed from the time that you press the button, and your character actually follows suit; took some getting used, and I eventually learned how to adjust, but it REALLY put me off at first, and almost made me permanently shelve the game after my first play, at that. The game's default difficulty setting might be rather punishing for your tastes, so feel free to adjust it as you see fit. Personally, I found the game's soundtrack to be my most favorite part of the entire game; the game just gives me something to do while I listen to it; reminds me of music from Kirby and Paper Mario games, among others. Overall, I'm enjoying it, but don't expect anything incredibly revolutionary, or genre re-defining.
