Phantom Fury

Ok I want to be 100% clear here, personally liked playing this game, I like Shelly and the voice actress returning and I also love the art style a mixture of oldschool 90's with early 00's 3D worlds plus the music it's very epic. But that is a much prase I can give becuase the story is generic, trying to be mutiple fps genres like Half-Life, Quake, etc and not excuted well at onces but very close it was just to the finish line. I'm a little bummed since there is no new game plus, so you can't take your upgrades with you on another run which is really annoying. Lastly I had models and textures pop in's and the npc's a a little dumb they pop in and nothing happends until I get in range then the npc's start working. My personal overall experiece was good but I do have gripes with it and if your going to get this please read the reviews first. Also and I mean a major also if your coming from Ion Fury to this please keep your expectations low it is high addredline but not as high and I would get it as a gift or get it on sale.

Another horrible game by the company trying to destroy (& cash in on) the 3D Realms name. Having unfullfilling combat, the game takes the worst from modern shooters and the worst from older shooters and mixes them into uninspired bland levels. Full of childish humour the game reflects the mindset of the developers who respond to serious questions with crude, meme based, responses Even the cheapest, no budget, indie games match this POS because they at least put their heart into it. Beware reviews painting this as a great game; both Slipgate Ironworks & 3D Realms have been caught boosting their various games scores against the rules for various review forums (like Steam and Metacritic). This product, despite being made via the same tech as great shooters like Duke Nukem 3D, does not reflect the history of shooters. It is made by a team of developers who are Slipgate in name only and on the same tech as older games because they're too cheap to aquire new licenses. Go play any 30 year old Doom mod and you'll have a much more fun time.

I enjoyed Ion Fury and expansion Aftershock and I was looking forward to Phantom Fury, expecting much of the same retro shooter action. However, the lack of quicksave really sucked the fun out of the game for me. Other than a green banana in your lunch box, there’s not much that sucks more than having to replay the same section over and over because of a retarded checkpoint system. I would have thought as its predecessor had quicksave and being a ‘90s inspired shooter, quicksave would have been mandatory.

I think the concept and art direction are great, but the game is super buggy - that should come as a surprise to no one. No need to re-hash all the issues that you will find elsewhere as I have experienced most of them as well. For me, additionally... subtitles, hints and objective don't work or work for a while, then don't work. I installed using the offline installer to install on my gaming laptop and desktop and both are RTX 4070 based. 3 separate attempts to play this game (install, uninstall, etc...), but I just gave up. There is a potentially really good game in here if the developer actually spends the time and resources to fix them. Sadly, that does not look like that will ever happen.

Ion Fury was an amazing game that pushed the build engine to the limits helped kick off the neo boomer shooter trend. Phatom fury on the other hand goes for an early 2000s feel that seems to be going for duke nukem forever early beta vibes. Which would be fine, IF the game was good. unfortunately, much like bombshell, is just average at best. The retro 2000s ish looking visuals look good for what its trying to do, but it would be more impressive if, like Ion Fury, had pushed an older engine like unreal or goldsource to its limits, but instead its just modern unreal so it ends up looking artificial in some areas such as character models. It doesn't help that even post patch, the game has a lot of bugs, bad AI and poor performance. The gameplay is descent but would have been better if return guns hadn't been nerfed and the shot gun split into a pump action double barrel and a triple barrel, neither of which are good unlike ion fury's shotgun. The new weapons are a bit better, thankfully. Overall, just an average fps that would have been better recieved if it had been its own thing instead of following up ion fury, but I guess slipgate didn't like the fact that they were one upped by voidpoint and just couldn't let bombshell go.
