Refined 5 Star game

If you like the previously released 5 Star games (aka the General games) then this is a must, especially if you like the modern (for the time) setting. The game engine and GUI is more refined than ever and it plays really well. The game plays in the known semi branching campaign way and it is a joy to play if you like the setting. If there is one thing I never liked with the more new games of the series was the more "realistic" map design/graphics. I always prefer the way the maps show in the original Panzer General, Allied General, Star General. Still, I admit this is a great game in the series and a must for any fun of turn based strategy games, or wargame genre. You won't be disappointed. I haven't played the GOG version yet as it was just released and I just found out about it, but if there is nothing wrong with this release from a technical point (and I have no reason to believe there is any issue), I highly recommend it. The only reason I don't put 5 stars is because of my preference for the map style/presentation. I can't take half a star off, so...

Only for the expert strategist but great

If you love the turn-based Panzer General series, yet you are looking for a game of this kind that gives you modern units, instead of WW2 ones, then this is the game to go. I have played it on my Windows 7 gaming computer, assembled in December 2014, as well as on my Windows 11 notebook, bought in February 2022, and the game works flawlessly on both machines, including its videos. It plays in a fictional WW3 scenario, in which China is at war with the United Nations. Thanks to that, there are numerous scenarios and plenty of campaigns you can choose from for all sides. There is also a scenario editor, to create your own missions, for endless fun. Now, the game is nothing for beginners and you need to study the manual carefully. It has a tutorial mission, but you still have to invest hours to entirely learn the game. It’s not that the game is hard to control or difficult to understand, but it is meant for strategy experts and quite different, compared to the Panzer General series. For example, the modern artillery has a far greater range and the same goes for helicopters. There are no planes and no ships, but you can now call in for airstrikes. The more units you defeat and the more cities/airbases you conquer, the more you earn prestige points, with which you can buy new units or call in the aforementioned airstrikes. Overall, the game is very tough and nothing for short-tempered players, but the good thing is that even if you play exactly the same mission, the AI behaves different, especially if you raise its prestige in the beginning, so that it can buy more units as well. Unfortunately, there is one (minor) flaw: Just like in Panzer General you are forced to move and conquer your objectives quickly, as the turns in every mission are limited and if you run out of turns your mission is lost. I always hated it, but at the same time it forces you to think carefully and act decisively, so it is not that bad either. Therefore, I still give this WW3 strategy gem 5/5.

One of the all time greats!

Before there the Wargame series, no other titles captured modern war scenarios or fun campaigns like People's General. The apex of the Five Star series. A wonderful game that still plays great.

Peoples General, a legendary SSi game.

If you're a fan of turn based resource based hex crawl tactics games then you'll love this. The game is similar to Advance Wars in it's mechanics, though with far more complexity and solutions in unit load-outs to make an interesting twist on turn based RTS/Hex Crawls. The game starts off with a hypothetical series of conflicts of the eastern and western powers with cinematic cut scenes between conflict maps when you complete areas. Units can be catered to things like anti-air, anti-armor, or anti-infantry among other things(Even upgrading to stealthy units) and can really alter the ways to win through games. The general idea is taking cities and industry areas turn profits which then at the start of turns produce funds to build your armies and get you closer to winning. Usually the win condition is to capture all cities in the map and thus progress. The games modifier(easy/medium/hard) for ease of play makes it accessible to all avenues of player as well. There are also simulation battles where you can pit yourself against differing factions for some single battles rather than the campaign. All avenues are quite fun. Having played this when it first came out I highly suggest it to those who like Lords of Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion series, Fantasy General, Close Combat, or Sid Meyer's Civ series games. Those more into Red Alert or Dark Reign, I'd definitely also suggest the slightly slower turn based strategy it offers. It's quite good at keeping pace and is easily re-playable for a hundred hours or more. I use this game as my high bar for turn based strategy games. Enjoy playing it, ...and thanks Gog for offering this to us all <3.

One of the greatest in the franchise

A turn-based strategy game using the familiar hexagonal map system. Very easy to play, but will take time to master if you are new to the Panzer General franchise. Works beautifully on Windows 11. Raster graphics kinda clunky as expected of a 24 year old product, but they do not detract from the appeal. I started playing the Panzer General games on a 3DO gaming console in 1995 and I was instantly hooked. Thank you GOG team for bringing back wonderful memories.
