This game bring back good ol days back then when first release. To be honest I like this game way better than Master of Orion Series. Wish I have kept the original game box that comes in with tech tree chart, it would be very helpful so you know what you planning to research, so unfort this download game doesn't have that tech tree chart.
I also noticed some are planning buying the whole set, it would be costly and I would recommended to get that strategy guide if you can, should have everything in there you need to know.
This game looks like other 4x strategies, but it isn't. You shouldn't compare it with MOO2, PAX gameplay is different: original ship design planner, original diplomacy-espionage window with possibility to buy absolutely everything from your allies and steal from your enemies (planets, technologies, ships), true RTS: you can switch game speed from 1 to 6 or press pause button (so you can freeze the time and give as many orders as you need). Map and ship movements between the stars probably the same as in Ascendancy game.
One exploit allow you to become a pirate:
1) Maintenance of the ship depends on equipment price. If your scientists didn't develop this equipment, maintenance price would get + sign instead of -. It means you can have endless amount of the ships and profit on it.
2) You need full technically advanced ally to buy last modifications of the ships.
3) You shoudn't develop any ship equipment to make ship maintanance profitable.
I still play the CD version i bought 17 years ago, but it's not designed for today's computers, so the colors are all out of balance. Finally i get the version of the game i have loved sense it came out.
If you like the Master of Orion series. This will be a game you'll love for years to come. I Highly recommend it to anyone. It's more then nostalgic love. This is an experience of gaming history.
When I first played this game, I had no clue how it worked. I would just sit messing around until my inevitable defeat at the hands of some enemy or another. But hey, I was like what, 5 when it came out? And despite all that, I still loved the game.
As time went by, I continued playing, learning bit by bit how it worked. Granted, I never played for long enough to truly get to grips with the strategy, but I at least got over the basics during childhood and even tried some multiplayer over lan. Pax Imperia was a game I could go back to over and over even as other games in my collection gathered dust in some plastic box somewhere in my house.
It wasn't until later in life that I was able to try out the MOO series. And honestly, I just couldn't get into it. By all means, MOO is a great game series (well... most of it is), but honestly, it always made me want to go back to Pax. I love the space 4x genre, I really do, but apart from Endless Space, no other game lived up to my experiences of Pax Imperia.
So what is it about PIED that I really love? Well the real-time aspect for one thing is something you just don't see with other games in the genre. The game is nice to look at, the UI (and race selection screen) is pretty and there are many aspects of 4x games that tend to get overcomplicated that Pax makes nice and streamlined. Battles are interesting (though they do get repetitive, but at least the weapon effects are pretty and change as tech improves), the music is brilliant and ship design strikes the perfect balance between complication and freedom. The AI may leave much to be desired, but no game is perfect.
Perhaps I'm clouded by nostalgia. Perhaps my attention span is the main reason for me preferring this game over other titles. Perhaps I just have bad taste. But whatever the reason, I prefer Pax to MOO.
My verdict: honestly worth a try if you're interested in the genre. If you don't like it, fair enough. But don't knock it until you try it.
This one is my all-time favorit. I have the original disk, and i'm still playing it regulary. In fact i was just playing when i received a mail from GOC which offered me Pax among some other games. There are plenty options for developing your own ship types, weapon systems etc The goal is simple, kill all opponents. Pax has given me many and many hours of fun, and will the continue to do so.
(I would have give more stars if it was optional, so: 6 out of 5)
