Patrician IV is the sequel to the historical trading simulation and strategy series. You are a merchant in northern Europe in the late Middle Ages when the Hanseatic League was flourishing. Your goal is to rise to the most successful and influential member of the Hanse, ultimately being elected Elderman, leader of the trading league. You start bargaining with common goods, build up your own production and establish a merchant fleet. Later on, you will gain more and more political influence and even found new towns.

However, a Hanse merchant's life can also have its dark sides. On your way to power you have to hold your ground against fierce rivals, whom you have to fight with economic competition, price wars or impure means such as sabotage. Will you even engage in piracy?

Key features:

  • Become a powerful merchant - rise through the ranks using your increasing fame and wealth to shape towns from small villages to glorious capitals under your control
  • A complete strategic simulation - balance competing interests, trade routes, political turmoil, disease, weather, piracy and greedy royalty
  • Build an empire - construct buildings and hire workers, stimulating demand for common and exotic goods
  • Battle on the high seas - protect your ships from pirate raiders in realistic and exciting sea battles
  • Visually stunning - a powerful new graphics engine lets you visit bustling and realistically recreated medieval cities such as London, Novgorod, Cologne and Bergen
  • Friendly Interface and Gameplay - Players will enjoy a brand-new, user friendly interface that makes Patrician IV easy to play but challenging to master

Not much new substance

I had Patrician 3 and it was a game I enjoyed. Recently I purchased Patrician 4 but after a few hours of play I did not see any major improvements over the previous version. For some reason game software writers think that eye candy is an important improvement, which is not. Actually the graphics of previous version were more likeable. Other than new graphics and a more difficult user interface there is not much new material. The fonts are only for the eyes of a 15 years old and are not scalable which reduces the pool of possible buyers like me (I am a retired professional with free time who has macular degeneration in the eyes and the small fonts make this game less enjoyable.) Granted I did not progress enough to have sea battles yet but certain aspects of the user interface pushed me to stop to play it for long. For example I still did not discover where you can see your total amount of money during a purchase. The amount of goods you buy or sell is determined by moving the mouse to right or left but it is difficult to set it exactly because of mouse sensitivity. Is there a mouse sensitivity setup button? In summary, this is a game not much different than its previous version. It may be attractive to first time buyers of the title at its discounted price, but not to those who already have the Patrician 3.

Very good trading game

The game is pretty similar to Patrician 2 and its addon (internationally sold as full price game Patrician 3), but that is not a bad thing. It is still mainly focussed on trading with your ships, while it adds some more content once you became mayor, like researching new ship types, etc. The combat is similar to Patrician 2 and Pirates!, unlike Patrician 3 it does not force you to take control over all ships of a convoy at the same time (you can choose just one ship for combat if you like, which make the combat much easier to control). The game works fine under Linux in Wine/Lutris. There's just one annoyance: savegames only become visible after a restart of the game. An integrated Intel UHD is enough to run this game on high details. If you already own Patrician 2 or 3 and are happy with the low resolution 2d graphics, there's perhaps no real reason to buy this game at the full price. But if you don't own them or get this game at a discount, I can highly recommend it. If you're unsure if you should buy Port Royale or Patrician, I can recommend the Patrician series much more than Port Royale. If you like combat more than trading, you should get Pirates! instead.

Very nice trading game in The Hansa

In Patrician 4, you take on the role of an aspiring trader in 14th century Northern Europe, doing business in the Hanseatic League's many cities. You start off with modest wealth, which you try to increase by buying low and selling high, first buying whatever the various cities have available and taking them to other cities, then eventually building your own production buildings to supply the cities with your own goods. As you do so, you also earn the respect of the cities' burghers and can even run for the title of mayor, and, if your become one of the top merchants of the whole Hanseatic League, even that of the Alderman, the president of the League, who has access to special privileges. There is also combat, but it's definitely not the focus of the game. What's hot +Relatively complex trading simulation that not only builds on supply and demand but also has events impacting prices. Also, there are regional goods, which is cool. +Climbing the social ladder is interesting and reaching new levels is meaningful, requiring you to have wealth, ships and employees. +The game aged quite well, while the graphics are somewhat dated, the gameplay is still solid. What's not -When you start to become a threat, your rivals in the city (mostly the incumbent mayor) start sabotaging your businesses. While it's understandable, there is unfortunately no way to prevent this. -Even worse, each region has a prince whose mood constantly decreases and has to be appeased by gifts he occasionally demands. The problem is that these demands come very rarely and unless you check in every few days, it's very easy to miss them. But even if you do appease them, it's usually not enough to restore their mood to 100%. Also, you can only do these quets when you have a high enough rank. This all leads to you being powerless to stop thhe princes' sieges of the cities most of the time, severely hurting the mid-to-late game.

A downgrade from Patrician 3

I love Patrician 3 and I have played thousands of hours of it throughout the years and we're a group of friends who get the urge to play together every few years and have done so for almost 20 years. Everyone of us bought Patrician 4 originally and we all went back to Patrician 3. There are a few improvements but the main issue for most of us were the introduction of auto-trade. Why anyone would want to play a trading game with automated trading? Like a driving game with self-driving cars. The switch to 3D graphics is also not an improvement in my opinion. While not a horrible game, the fact that Patrician 3 is a better experience (in my opinion at least) makes this a pass for me.

Still a great game

Patrician 4 ist not for everyone. You need to like trade sims to enjoy it. But if you do, it's your game. Better than it's sister series Port Royal and allows you to dump a more or less infinite amount of time into it (if you want to max out the hanse or such). One thing that was not obvious to me: if you start the game with GOG-Galaxy it will start up the base game. You can start the addon in the additional options (or directly in the folder). That's a bit inconvenient - and it took me a full game run into the later stages to notice the missing features. Which I knew from owning a CD Version of the game previously. Did I already mention it's a great game? Bought it again on GOG to have easy access for the future. Ah yes, what needs to be mentioned: The mid to late game can be a pain. You typically need to rely on the lords winning a siege to bring up their happiness to then get high happiness quests (like buying shares and building land routes). The happiness bar drops quite fast when you have already scaled up your production in the region and the quests do still not appear more often. That makes it more or less impossible to bring up happiness sufficiently by "regular" means. Could have been handled better.
