Both great and deeply flawed experience

There is a lot of things to unpack here. Be aware that you need to have an understanding of D&D 3.0 or 3.5 (or Pathfinder, obviously) to have a chance of *not* breaking your teeth at your first attempts at this game. If you don't then the difficulty is going to be steeper than that of the Dwarf Fortress back in the day. The game is designed in a very old-school way, and I mean it; without a guide you will miss several things, you will lose a lot and there will be plenty of choices you will regret, gameplay-wise (and that is both fine and a welcome, although hard to bear, change from contemporary games). If you're fine with both (or feeling nostalgic for original Baldur's Gate and the like) you're going to have a truly wonderful time: The story might not really be top-of-the-line, the characters are not the best written companions to find in video games' world, and the gameplay has its share of bugs; but somehow all of it combined works wonders and will suck you in for hours withound end. Plus, if you've ever been charmed by Fearun's wonders (either dealing with Bhaal's spawns or saving Ten Tows) you'll feel right at home. The game's world has amazing reactivity to player character and actions, especially in chapters 1-4 (5 and 6 look and feel rushed), to the point you will want to create different characters just to see how different dialouges and quests play out. On top of that mythic paths add a significant amount of replayability to already long game - I had 200+ hours sunk into it when I managed to finish the game for the first time. The RTS-esque "crusade mode" is boring, tedious and unrewarding; I found it to be more of a nuisance than a benefit to the game. TL;DR Tedious, glitchy and difficult game, but very rewarding - especially for anyone longing for "classic RPGs" like original Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale or Pillars of Eternity.

This game is surprising me

I have never played Pathfinder before. I’ve just reached the third act, and I must say that, overall, it’s among the best games I’ve ever played. It’s diverse and well-crafted. It has a storyline that seems interesting, at least up to the point I’ve reached. It offers a very solid RPG component with intriguing choices, although, since it’s my first playthrough, I can’t fully grasp the impact of my decisions. The managerial aspect is quite simple at first. Later on, it becomes a bit more complex, making the game even more engaging. What impressed me the most is that this game manages to surprise me. Considering that I’m old enough to have played all the best PC games since PCs have existed, that’s no small feat.

Awesome Experience

Awesome RPG Experience of epic proportions. The Game is hard, especially for those who haven't met Pathfinder system yet. However, figuring everything out and finding Your build is a part of the Fun! Good advice: You will have a party of 6, you need specialise your members. I recommend strong tank (or maybe 2), healer+buffer, 2x dps (archer builds are awesome) and mage(s). You will get some pets that can help tank or you can use summons to help you tank. Do not try to have all the skills on your main character, or they will be useless. Party members can lend you help, so it is good to have always one specialist for each skill or two (persuasion, trickery, lore, athletics, etc.). Story is very good. Not a good game for a people who don't like to read and think!

A Titan of the Genre

This is a true gem in the fantasy game pantheon. The customization options are ambitious, and the story is one of successfully raising stakes to a pinnacle I have not experienced since Baldur's Gate Throne of Bhaal. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great story with branching paths.

I really wanted to like this game.

I was a big fan of the original, with a few issues. Unfortunately the game designers decided to double down on the issues. I'll start with the strengths of the game. First, character and storytelling. If you want good, deep, rich storytelling (and if you're a fan of RPGs, you probably do), this is a great series for it. This game delivers, without question. The story is deep, rich, and complex. The writers don't tell you how to feel about anything, but they do offer you plenty of choices, which is a nice departure from some games that force you to take a specific role. There are a lot of different characters with their own unique stories to explore as well. Speaking of unique characters, you can create and play your own character how you want, as well as reshaping your companions so you aren't stuck with a playstyle you don't like. So that's pretty nice. And that's about it, as well as where the game starts to fall apart. That deep story? It's DARK. It's lie the writers saw Warhammer 40K and said "that's a bit too optimistic, isn't it?" Grimdark doesn't cover it. What's more, where other games reward you for making good choices, this game punishes you for making bad choices, defined as "you didn't anticipate exactly what the game designers wanted you to do". Lest you think I am whining over Hard mode being too hard, I'm talking about Story Mode. Add on to that the AI is so painfully stupid you almost are required to use turn based combat, only by definition the turn based combat in this series is slow, painfully bad, and designed to be frustrating (it was my major complaint with the original). Dealing with traps and locked chests has, if anything, gotten WORSE. As I said, the game designers managed to double down on everything bad (including the grimmest parts of the storytelling) in the original without offering any substantial improvements. I simply can't recommend this game when there are other, better games out there, including the original Pathfinder.
