A deeply, deeply flawed masterpiece
I give it 5 stars because it's an experience worth having, despite the amount of bullshit one has to wade through. The game is long and fun all the way through. First of all, most of criticisms concerning bugs, performance and QoL are no longer valid, because after 2 years of updates it's is more or less playable. Still chock full of glitches, but after over 100 hours never experienced something game-breaking, requiring me to revert to an earlier save. Mechanics-wise it's great. As a person who treats combat in RPGs like a distraction at best, I had great fun learning the system throughout the playthrough. Unlike most other RPGs it remains challenging the whole time, maybe except for the final dungeon. Kingdom management seems like a port of some failed shitty mobile game. The only thing missing is the ability to buy Building Points™ for real money. Writing is all over the place. Sometimes the dialogue is decent, and sometimes cringeworthy. Sometimes you a have great way to roleplay, and sometimes you're softlocked into making certain story decisions at the threat of huge gameplay disadvantages. The story starts as the most banal "obviously good vs obviously evil" type, but then it throws convention defying curveballs at you, where the many RPG cliches are treated with real life logic. Accepting a quest from a wrong person can have disastrous results, with the choice to at best mitigate the damage you've done, and sometimes the evil motivated choice is the best one long term. Then again the game comes back to the banality, especially at the endings. It's got the "choices having consequences throughout the playthrough" part really good. The alignment system intrinsically sucks. The companions are mildly amusing at best (Nok-nok) and infuriatingly annoying at worst (Amiri), and most of them are at the worse side. Luckily, you've the option to hire custom made mercenaries and exile (sadly not kill) most of the story comps.
