Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Enhanced Plus Edition

Like another review, this game looks nice and has great presentation and options. However, the combat system and overall gameplay is very broken. Specifically, the time it takes to invoke actions during combat is completely random. You can repeat the same battle over and over and get action timings from 0.0s to 6.0s at random. This makes battles unpredictable. For example, you may issue commands right after the system auto-pauses and get timings for 4 characters of: 0.4, 2.3, 5.3, 2.6 and then reload and repeat the same battle and get timings of: 4.6, 5.2, 1.5, 4.4. Your combat strategy, then, is useless since you can't predict the timing of actions. Plus, if you wait to issue commands, your timings will decrease faster than linear time (character prep for battle??), but if you wait in realtime after issuing commands, the timings will decrease along with linear time. Also, resting doesn't heal, only spells do. So, if you explore the world, you will not be able to lose a battle without getting stuck if you don't have a cleric. Additionally, durations of travel are excessive and your characters fatigue easily. All of this means that if you intend to move around the map, you will be resting almost every other move. This makes the game very boring and interrupts any fun you would have. I think the game is trying to be too "realistic" at the expense of enjoyment. Plus. the maths of the game are just plain wrong. Good luck trying to play this if you buy it. I wouldn't spend much on it if you don't want to feel your money has been wasted.

Once this game is playable from beginning to end I will raise my rating to 5 stars buy it now. As is you will have fun but you will be unable to finish the game feels like a late Beta release. On the upside the company has been patching and the game has the potential to be fabulous to all Baldurs gate fans, so give it a month of patching then if a BG fan buy it. Not sure why Owlcat released early shooting themselves in the foot with bad reviews due solely to bugs likely a money issue. Hopefully this game reaches its potential.

Why is everything in this game so slow?

I think i would enjoy this game, if it played instead of crashing everytime i try to open it(haven't been able to play it past the first loading screan)

I'm a fan typically of the genre, loving games like Pillars of Eternity and the like for their rich stories and the interactivity and RP value. This game has several fun and variable choices and the alignment system is done better than most games, so that's a plus. So why two stars? Literally everything else. To start, the game is buggy, runs poorly even on my high end computer, and the myriad other issues i'm sure people have mention have plagued me as well. Long load times, poor optimization, glitches and bugs and crashes, oh my! All of this could be forgiven on its own as patches are forthcoming but. They are not alone. The balance in this game, as many have said, is awful? It feels like if you play the wrong sort of character from the start you're out of luck. Don't have trickery on your main character and make one wrong choice? Good luck dealing with traps for a significant chunk of the first leg of quests. Not looted/bought enough bombs, which the game never told you you needed? Sorry! It's really just annoying. In PoE and Divinity I always felt that I could puzzle my way out of a situation with whatever party I had and this is just not the case in this game. And the move speed! Ouch. Finally, the story is just not..... worth it. At all. The characters are one-note, boring, and honestly feel like someone written in the early 2000s. Which is likely a holdover from the pnp campaign this is based on, but really, the writers couldn't have done a little bit to update them to modern standards? I thought we left these things behind. And no pure gay characters too! Retro! My final thought is that this game reminds me of Wasteland 2. That game was rough around the edges, really hard to get into without a lot of pre-game research, and was puuuunishingly difficult at the beginning. But that game had good writing and a reason to push on, which Kingmaker just doesn't. I'm sure someone will love it, but not me. Save your money, buy a game that's not stuck in the past.
