Description
It has been 4,097 years since the founding of the space colony Lentis, now a war-torn sector of the galaxy, abandoned and left to rot by humanity.

You are the pilot of the Imperial starfighter, Parkan, assigned to the patrol base, Argus. You journeyed to this forsaken corner of the galaxy to find a lost research vessel called Wanderer, which has mysteriously vanished in the deepspace vacuum of the Lentis sector. Now, however, you find yourself aboard your ship as it helplessly drifts into orbit around a strange and nameless sun - your last interstellar jump has knocked out your starfigher's long-distance communication system and the hyperdrive.

Your task is rather simple: find the missing research vessel, discover what happened to it, and return back to Argus base. But you have your work cut out for you... to find the Wanderer and make it back in one piece, you'll need to traverse the dark galactic expanse that is Lentis and overcome several challenges:

- Refit your Parkan fighter for interstellar travel and secure fuel for its engines.
- Upgrade Parkan: find new weapons systems and navigation aids before moving on to create a squadron of auxiliary drones and ships.
- Explore the dangerous and remote planets of Lentis: Establish relationships with representatives of indigenous robot clans and try your hand at being a galactic merchant or a mercenary.
- Battle local pirates, try to gain the upper hand in space dogfights and survive numerous skirmishes with ship crews and bands of marauders in the labyrinths of derelict spaceports.
- And finally, colonize the entire surface of planets, construct bases, mines, and factories – establish your own clan of robots as you scour Lentis in search of the missing Wanderer.

Your mission is clear – how you choose to complete your objective is up to you!
  • Hybrid gameplay: unique blend of space sim, first-person shooter, strategy, and role-playing.
  • Historically significant: first ever Russian space sim, originally released in 1997 and one of the first space games to feature procedurally generated star maps and planets.
  • Openworld space faring: explore & colonize a wide variety of planets, engage in diplomacy with several different robot clans, dogfight in space, choose to either destroy or board enemy ships, be a freelancer or a pirate.

A way ahead of it's time

Though it might sound a bit old-news today, at the time it was a very-very innovative game. It was one of the first if not the first game to merge Elite space experience with FPS combat and Planet colonization. Even today quite a few games can say they do the same thing and to it right. Even with all the limitation and quirks of a very old game it's still a very enjoyable experience. Pros: - A very well-made procedural-crafted hybrid universe with lots of stuff to explore - A reason to explore - though a story line will guide you through all the essential ship upgrades, looking around beyound that may lead to some lucrative finds. Mostly great planets and stuff develop said planets, but there are also some secret upgrades lying around. - Lots of small little details you don't really expect from such an old game - music playing in bars, dynamic lighting, semi-persistent minefields, actual inter-sector economy simulation with no cheating. Reachable and explorable moons (sometimes with pirate stations) - Quite a streamlined experience - though the game may still appeal confusing for some people, as it relies a lot on it's manual to deliver the pre-story (much like most older games), - the game itself doesn't require much of prior knowledge. Cons: - Dumb battle AI that tends to cram all ships into huge "balls" that will blow themself up with friendly fire. But it may still steamroll you in large numbers you very much - Weird story that makes a sudden "twist" near the end and pulls out some space magic for no apparent reason. Prior to that it's a strict sci-fi. - A hardly challenging (except for two boss fights) FPS combat where you may always run back to your ship for repairs. - Some people has real problems with actually discovering the main goal after completing all the prerequisites. That's the only place where game doesn't tell you want to do and for some people it's confusing. ~: - They've changed the original music. Dunno if that one is better or not.

Music issue

Istead of the great original OST the only music we have now is a looped 3 minute track which won't change even during battles. Okay, let's say I have the original game music and I prefer to play it in the background with my media player. But the built-in looped track can't be turned off. The original music made 50% of the game. This version is srtipped of it and gets 3 stars for it is playable on current systems which is good, but it is not as enjoyable as it used to be.

A very rough 90's gem from Russia

Parkan: The Imperial Chronicles, is a very rough 90's gem from Russia. It's an open world Space Combat Flight Sim, with First Person Shooter elements. What sets this game apart from similar games of the day, is the planet/base exploration element. The idea behind the game is ambitious, but the execution leaves much to be desired, due to the limits of the technology of the time, and the lack of quality control. If we lived still in the 90's and the game had better quality control, this would be a 5 star blockbuster game. Now days it seems that two stars are more than enough. (For a slightly more expanded mini review of the game, and a couple of useful links, I will point you to: https://www.gog.com/forum/parkan_series/parkan_mini_review_and_some_resources )

The first space sim I really enjoyed.

When I first tried this game, it really stood out for a few reasons: - mouse control done right (unlike most flight sims) - reasonably good HUD - an option to board enemy ship and wipe it's crew (useful if you want to avoid a space fight and don't mind a bit of 1st person shooter) - quality CD music to listen to while flying Overall it was such a smooth experience for it's day, that I completely forgot it had plot and objectives while I've been just flying the space back and forth :-) And even 2 decades later there are not many games in the genre that are up to level set by Parkan. I'm really surprised and excited to see it come back!
