Gothic Story, Frantic Gameplay. Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy a gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. It's an adrenaline addict's nightmare, where hellish monsters swarm in seemingly endless mobs.
Graphically, Painkiller is unmatched. The proprietary PAIN Engine puts out an unbelievably high polygon count, while adding increased texture quality and the latest lighting and shadowing techniques, including soft shadows, DOT3 bump mapping, water reflections, glass simulation, volumetric light and fog, and more. Plug in the Havok 2.0 physics engine, and you get a realistic environment in a totally fantastical setting.
Stranded in a place between Heaven and Hell, your time of judgment is at hand. The Underworld is on the verge of unholy war, and you are but a pawn in the infernal battle. As you fight for your purification, the truths behind the deceptions are revealed.

Ho my! I was starting my high school when I played this! Just a classic!. Shoot and kill, heavy metal music. Lots of time online also in solo mode. An instant classic. Your gonna love this great old-school shooter game! The expansion bring a little more amusement.
You jump around like a madman shooting everything in your path while heavy metal music pumps in the background. Primitive satisfaction everytime something dies by your hand. The gib factor is high with all weapons. To proceed everything in the area has to die. My pleasure. Allright I have to say it sometimes is a bit repetitive. Also like all eastern euopean studios the game comes with dreadful mood and a few bugs sprinkled in. But it's a damn blast to play. Mindless killing have never felt better.
My only complaint is that it gets repetitive in parts. It has more in common with C64/NES era top/down shooters vs Doom/Quake era FPS's with similar gameplay to Serious Sam.
If you like shooters for the shooting seemingly endless hordes of monsters, this is a great game for you!
Most things were already written, so, what to say? If you are on the hunt to find a simple arcade type shooter game with swarm of enemies, well, than this is it. You found it.
You go from one room to another, kill all the enemies and go to the next room until you end the level. There are different themes (medieval, WWI, hospital/
Painkiller is not Doom, Quake etc., it is somehow similar to Serious Sam, however SS has much bigger almost "open-world" level. Painkiller doesn't.
The most similar 2D and 3D games to Painkiller on this site are:
- Tower of Guns
- The Chaos Engine
- Ziggurat (however that one has much more RPG elements)
- Firestarter
- Crimsonland
- Alien Shooter/Zombie Shooter series
- Lichdom: Battlemage (with more RPG elements)
Anyway. If you play it with big breaks, it can be fun. Like playing the real pinball, that you don't play hours long.
The graphics are still nice in 2016 (yes, I know there is a HD remake out there, but who cares) and it works flawlessly even on modern week computers with Integrated graphics (Celeron, Atom).
Four stars from me.
Painkiller is a direct heir to the unquestionable king of all action games - Doom 2. Where the creators of the original game fail to deliver the real thing in the DOOM 3, a stereotypical 3D first person boredom simulator, Painkiller shines as an perfect example of how shooter were meant to be made. The graphics, level design and architecture are amazing, the action is non-stop and the enemies are crazy after your blood. They come at you in hordes, they outnumber you 100 to one. But there is plenty of ammo and no need for reloading. The boss battles are especially memorable and I have yet to see a game where they reach such epic proportions.
