Great little rogue-lite

Overfall does a great job to keep me coming back for more and it's unlock system is just interesting enough to keep me playing, the artsyle is unique and pretty great and the combat mechanics are a great mix of RPG and RTS. All in all this game is great, but what will make it amazing is the story creator mode, which adds tons of replayability Full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4lN2BSDlRE The core gameplay loop is interesting and there are a plethora of encounters that have remained fresh through several (dozen) tries. The game has plenty of unlocks that are persistent even when the actual run at the game fails (much like many rogue lites these days) The dialogue is pretty nice! with quite a few options i didn't expect. Also, the combat is very strategic using a hex-based turn system where each characters turn consists out of 3 actions, giving it all a pretty nice mix of Strategy & RPG elements. Graphically it looks and performs fine, but the options are threadbare,.

Heartily recommended!

Being a gamer since before ZX Spectrum, I've witnessed it all. The good the bad and under the kitchen sink. Disillusioned with recent AAA titles I reached for Overfall and it has kept me coming back for another go for close to 20 playthroughs now. The music score is excellent, doesn't get annoying after many hours of gameplay. The sound effects are very satisfactorily squishy slashy where necessary. The art style looks simple but is spot on with attention to detail. Chibi style characters that over time grow on You and make You laugh with appropriate story context. Well written short stories in humorous light style that will force You to revisit them time and again. Numerous witty references to well known games, books, products, songs. At it's core it's a roguelike with turn based tactical combat, some resource management, a bit of trade and unlockables that allure to try the game from a slightly different perspective. Three decently tailored difficulty settings allow for a more forgiving experience. All of the above outlined positives together offer more than just the sum of their parts! Haven't experienced a single crash or hang of any sort. Downsides? Yes, unfortunately, the GOG release (GOG-3) doesn't offer the Story Creator Mode, which supposedly allows community users to create new content. (Hopefully added soon GOG?)

Great game, but why no "saves"?

This is a highly enjoyable game. Much more than I expected it to be. But there are a few things that keep it from being perfect. So I will mention them first: Undoubtly, the most annoying one is the fact that there is no "save"! Not even "quicksave" or "save points". You just pick up from where you left when you last exited the game. This means that 1. if you lose a battle, you have to go all over again, from the start! 2. you don 't get the chance to see where different decisions or choices in a situation could lead you (and there are plenty of them). Other minor complains is that the animation during the battle could have been a bit more realistic (even the archers don 't look at the direction they shoot). But it is somehow still fun though and enjoyable, and it doesn 't affect the gameplay at all. Another thing that could have been improved is the (no) choice of characters when you start the game. Fans of "character customizing" (like me) will be greatly dissapointed. You just get the same 2 heroes, with the same strengths and weaknesses. You can only choose 3 secondary characteristics out of 4 or 5 and... that 's all you can do. Pitty. More choices (if not on the characters, at least on their characteristics or weapons) could have boosted the replayability of the game. On the other hand now... (we are getting to the positive things) you do get a vast majority of really diverse companions to choose from, when the time comes. More than any other similar game I can think of. The stories are interesting and different enough (although some get a bit repetative - especially since without a save mode, you start over the game too many times). And some are really FUNNY. And with some hints for the modern times (e.g. those with the bards and musicians). The combat system seems a bit strange at first, but it can be easily learned and takes a bit more time to master. Not hugely deep though. Still simple, enjoyable and with a lot of variations. All in all... this is a greatly enjoyable game, heartly recomended, really funny at some points, with its only real disappointment (but a big one) being its lack of saving mode.

Fun for an hour; way too simple

The game is not totally bad but is a casual game that is normally played on mobile phones. Not worth spending time on it. Feels like FTL on the sea with better graphics and very simple mechanics (FTL is way more fun, though) I got it because GOG recommendation engine suggested and I'm pretty disappointed. Not much more to say about it.

Fun, just modern enough

Overfall doesn't make any big mistakes. Perhaps some of the interactive stories were trivial or corny but most were OK, and some of these took away the dreariness that often permeates the genre. Personalities were not developed. I felt a little bit rushed (hesitant to explore for long) because the longer you take to advance, the tougher it gets to make it through to the end. But this rogue-like delivers in terms of interesting turn-based combat, varied advancement options, explorable world, variety of NPCs, replayabililty, and competence of design and mechanics. 3 levels of difficulty did help me learn how the game works. It did run flawlessly (on Linux). Lots of combat. Each character has 3 actions in each turn - movement, utility, attack. The actions of the party members need to be carefully coordinated as things get difficult. The order of combat (which character goes first) varies a bit from battle to battle. It is fun to mess around with different classes and get familiar with how skills of one class complement, or fail to complement, the skills of another class. If you aren't careful with mixing and matching classes, your party will fail. This is a rogue-like with permanent death so you start over a lot. But not too much. (There is a limited resurrection option) Unlocked classes are available for the next game. Sometimes the best choice is to avoid combat. A situation can require thoughtful consideration. Mostly logical but not always. You must advance your reputation with some of the 8 races that have relations with each other. How you deal with one race might impact your relations with another race. 5 stars for combat and competence, 3.5 stars for character appearance, and 4 stars for everything else. But maybe the most important factor is the bottom line - I just enjoyed playing it. 25 hrs so far & plenty fun left in it. If I didn't have other new games to try, I'd still be playing. So, for overall enjoyment, 5 stars.
