Outlaws + A Handful of Missions (Classic, 1997)

I'm torn. One one hand, the levels are large and expansive, the atmosphere, cutscenes and music is top notch, the story gripped me with its harsh sadness as a kid, but... ...having revisited it as a more experienced adult, the gunplay and some of the puzzles are just too frustrating. As in, hard as hell! Tell you what: If you plan on doing one playthrough on Easy difficulty, and don't mind consulting a walkthrough for some of the more ridiculous puzzles, I can't recommend this game enough. But if you want a shooter which rewards skill gains by making the harder difficulties simply a bigger challenge rather than hair-tearing frustration, consider skipping it. Kid gamers can truck through almost any difficulty through sheer perseverance and the adaptability of a young mind. I have mastered and enjoyed games as a kid that I wouldn't touch as an adult. But this one had me beat even back then. Easy difficulty or nothing.

I own the CD for Outlaws but it never runs properly on Windows 7. Now it's finally on GOG and it runs perfectly on Windows 7. Outlaws is an FPS set in the Wild West. The game is basically the formula for fps games back in the day. Search for keys to unlock doors all while blowing bad guys away with an arsenal of weapons. This game has THE best soundtrack in video game history. Listen to it for yourself. Now it may sound like a standard fps but it has somethings that other fps games lacked at the time and even lack today. The shooting is very satisfying and the weapons are really fun to use. Especially the shotgun. Wait until you get to the train level and use the shotgun to blow the criminals of the moving train. The levels are large and open. My personal favorite level is the sanctuary. It's a large town with saloons, funeral homes, banks, museums, jails, and many other buildings. The cutscenes are handdrawn and they are very fun to watch. I highly recommend this game. Where are you Marshall?

This is my favorite western game of all time. Now GOG has made it possible to play this with windows 7 & 8. GOG did a slick job of solving the installation and graphic problems of outlaws with the later versions of windows. I downloaded the new glide and left the default settings from GOG and now I can run this on my Windows 8 laptop. BEFORE PLAYING: Go into your install files and launch "nglide_config",then change render to Direct X, your resolution, refresh rate and vertical sync off.Apply. You'll get an upgraded version of the game without any crashes. Works like a charm. The game itself is still a gem. Hand drawings,wonderfull Sergio Leone like musics, Ugly difficulty will challenge your skills and there's a lot of easter eggs. Lucasarts at its finest.

I remember getting this game from walmart back in the day and after years of joyful use the first cd cracked and i was unable to play for many many years and the game hates modern operating systesm so even if i had a new copy of the game it would have never worked in its entirety. Then comes along gog.com with it's mysterious black magic and gets the thing working! I was so excited i downloaded it at 0.3mb/s and watched the bar from 0 to 100%! Game itself is fun and exciting and it's truly one of the few games not appreciated enough from its time. I now have the highest of hopes for new ventures of multiplayer with other people on gog, when or however that may be achieved i don't know but i eagerly await it still!
