Description
In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
  • Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements.
  • You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide.
  • Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity.

Great horror game with flaws

Outlast is a first-person 3D game. Your goal is to escape from some creepy Asylum, where some experiments on patients have gone very wrong... You cannot fight in this game, you only have a camcorder with nightvision. The gameplay is thus about running and hiding from opponents, most of the time. Occassionally you need to solve simple puzzles like picking up keys etc. Graphics and sound are excellent, all in all it really makes you feel completely helpless in most situations, an effect that works particularly well at the beginning. The game overall runs stable and the ending has a nice surprise, in that regard reminding me of many horror movies. After the praise I should mention the game has some major downsides, however. The first and probably biggest problem is that the gameplay is too repetitive. Just running away from opponents is too little, I miss sophisticated puzzles or RPG elements, as in old classics like Waxworks- this mixes up the gameplay a little. The second minor issue is that the game lacks some obvious improvements, e.g. there could be more characters along the way, especially female characters seem entirely amiss.

Outdicks

Here's the thing: I preordered both Outlast and the last Amnesia and i was expecting Outlast to be mediocre at best ... i've never been so wrong. This game pretty much follows the example of Amnesia/Penumbra but adding the touch of experiencing things with a camera and the nightvision, nothing really outstanding but really enjoyable, great graphics and amazing sounds, Outlast is definitely worth a shot if you're into Horror/Adventure games p.s. : this game has way too many dicks

Amazing Game, don't buy the DLC

I love the horror genre. But not every game is gonna get me at all. I'm not exactly "looking" to get scared. But I love the horror genre for games like this, where the atmosphere is enthralling, where the music is phenomenal, and you ease into a world where anything can happen. ANYTHING. Then the scare aspect is when something legitimately freaks me the f*ck out, not just something like FNAF where the entire game relies on jumpscares. Anyways, this is one of those games that is well thought out. You know those horror movie cliches where the person doesn't run to the front door and leave the house and avoid a confrontation? Well this game addresses that. As soon as the main character finds some messed up sh*t he tries to leave ASAP. This kind of stuff stands out to me and really puts you into the world. As for whether you should buy it, yeah you should. It's the kind of game you play all night for 6 hours straight, turn off all the lights in your basement, plug in a controller for maximum comfort, put in headphones, and have a fun, and more importantly memorable time. Some say it gets a bit weak in the middle, but the ending/climax is very damn good. PS: Don't get the DLC. With both horror movies and games, there's a trend that I'll always notice. There's movies and games that are legitimately scary (Halloween, Alien Isolation), and there's movies and games that think by putting a lot of gore will somehow make it scary (Evil Dead Remake, The Evil Within). While the base game Outlast balanced these two subgenres perfectly, the Whistleblower DLC goes full on gorefest. Not my taste. Yes, Gore can add to the horror aspect, but it's not a substitute. Also it's repetitive as f*ck.

I see naked men...

The game was fun but not really scary. There were too many nude men. I guess penises are supposed to be scary. When I play a game that says Nudity and Strong Sexual Content I expect to see at least one nude female even a clothed female would have been a plus. When you get to the Female Ward don't get your hopes up because there are more nude men in there too. The only women in the game are talked about in notes and documents. I probably will not play this game a second time or the DLC. Games that go out of their way to exclude women are not for me.
