Fetch quests galore
Sometimes you stumble over games that defy their budget and give you something truly innovative to play. "Outcast - A New Beginning" is not this game. In this new iteration, the once proud pioneering PC franchise has regressed to reiterating stereotypical standards, to mind numbing fetch quests, frustrating button mashing time trials, console optimized controls, and level recycling much worse than Dragon Age 2. In other words, it's what the critics call "a solid action adventure" nowadays. Unfortunately, I came to dread especially the missions that are somewhat out of the ordinary, because they're usually glitched as funk. More than a year after release, A New Beginning still is a glitchy, buggy, unoptimized mess that sends my graphics card fans into a complete frenzy particularly during cutscenes and conversations. Of which there are many, most of them awkward, many bordering on the unprofessional. If they actually paid authors for this game, they've been ripped off. The endless, pointless dialog is a sheer yawnfest, and you'll see the twists and turns of the run-of-the-mill story from a mile away. Worldbuilding is a mockery of the original game's appeal, they'll gladly dive into the culturally insensitive for even the cheapest of puns, and their character design begins and ends with the obligatory pothead, haha, so funny, never seen that before. The gliding/flying mechanic is fun, or at least gets fun after two or three battery upgrades, I'll give them that. A well earned second star.
