As part of a covert experiment, the US military deployed a probe designed to prove the existence of a parallel universe hidden from our own. Although the probe successfully entered the alternate universe and reached a planet called Adelpha, its first crucial data transmission is mysteriously cut short.
The probe's unexpected demise triggers a disastrous chain of events resulting in the creation of a black hole, one that threatens to destroy the Earth. Unless the missing probe can somehow be found and repaired, planet Earth itself is doomed.
Vast and diverse continents to explore, inhabited by thousands of living creatures
An excellent mix of action and adventure, well-designed combat and complete freedom of movement
One of the best games of 1999 with a memorable and believable storyline set in the not-so-distant future

I missed this game when it came out originally, perhaps due to the high system requirements and did play it a few years ago. Outcast is a very absorbing and addicting game. You really do get immersed into this alien world. I like that it is basically an open world RPG mostly without the boring obsessive-compulsive elements of RPGs like character leveling and looting (though it has some of the latter and you can get better weapons by doing quests), but with the exploring and questing that actually feel meaningful. It holds up really well nowadays, especially regarding the core gameplay mechanics.
There is no other game out there which i prayed for a sequel that much than for this one, but they never made ...
If you want to enter a cool, very surreal, deep and interesting story you have to play this one.
Have fun!
I bought “Outcast” completely on a whim based on the user reviews that were glowing and without any prior knowledge of the game. And what can I say – I was exceptionally pleased.
“Outcast” is a Sci-Fi Action/Adventure game, concerning a travel to a parallel universe. You are a commander Cutter Slade and are tasked with saving the Earth and eventually an alternate world of Adelpha. This is a game that throws you head first into an unknown huge world and hopes you can make sense out of it, with the help of locals and your own wits. The territories of Adelpha are huge and have lots of quests – both mandatory and optional and you can complete a majority of them in any order you prefer.
What pleased me the most is that this game tells a story. You play it and through completing missions and conversing with locals you are getting a bigger picture of what is happening. Also I found the game quite long. Well, I don’t have time to play much but still it wasn’t a ten hour game.
Graphics are so-so even using an unofficial resolution increasing patch, but I wasn’t playing the game for eye candy and they served the purpose of keeping Adelpha alive. I liked the sound with the buzz of the city and people singing while working plus I actually liked voice acting. A minor drawback is that you have to set your hardware acceleration to Basic otherwise the background sound will go insane.
I have only two problems with it. The first: it being very unstable. The game kept crashing on me occasionally (I don’t know if it was a problem of the game or the resolution patch, but I had to save often in order not to lose a progress). The other: it lacked a satisfying ending. Seeing “The End” my only thought was “WTF? That’s it?” and the stupid scene after the credits didn’t help to alleviate my disappointment.
All in all it was a very solid game that kept me interested to the very (not so solid) end.
I played this game in 1999 when it was first released. It was the best looking game of 1999 that I had ever played (and I played many games that year and to date). Over the years I have played it various times and it has never has grown old. I always wished that Outcast 2: The Lost Paradise was developed and released but it never happened. APPEAL closed shop. When I heard that the founders of APPEAL bought the IP rights to the game, my hopes were revived and it looks like we just might have that opportunity to play a game in my opinion that holds the Best ever game title in gaming history. I emailed one of the founders and he replied stating he appreciated my enthusiasm and it is in the works again. So, Atari who held onto the IP rights all these years…shame on you and kudos to the APPEAL team. I look forward to the release of the second edition to Outcast. The original game will change your opinion to what action/ adventure gaming ought to be, so give it a try. You will experience a living adventure that is second to none. 1999 was a great year and soon I hope the second release will bookend that year.
