Description
“It is not an exaggeration to say that without alchemical engineering, civilization would not exist.”

Hailed as the most promising alchemist of his generation, Anataeus Vaya has just accepted a position as Head Alchemist of House Van Tassen, the oldest and richest of the city’s ancient Houses. But dangers lurk behind the family’s opulent facade, and alchemy alone may not solve every problem.

Opus Magnum is the latest open-ended puzzle game from Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem, Infinifactory, TIS-100, and SHENZHEN I/O. Master the intricate, physical machinery of the transmutation engine— the alchemical engineer’s most advanced tool— and use it to create vital remedies, precious gemstones, deadly weapons, and more.

Design Machines - Design and build machines that carry out alchemical processes using a variety of components including programmable arms, customizable tracks, and more esoteric devices like Van Berlo’s wheel and the Glyph of Animismus.

Open-Ended Puzzles - Compete against your friends and the world to build the simplest, fastest, and most compact solutions to the game’s challenges. Export animated GIFs of your elegant designs to show them off.

Rich Story - Intrigues and dark plots swirl around the city’s ancient Houses. Alchemists, who hold the power to create almost anything known to science, are highly sought— and highly dangerous.

Solitaire Minigame - Alchemical engineering takes focus and concentration. Take a break with Sigmar’s Garden, an original alchemy-based solitaire game. Every game is winnable, but not every game will be won…

Depth for Years

I got this game ages ago and I'm still playing it. It helps to take a break every once in a while, though I had to go back and re-solve earlier puzzles to get myself back in the mindset. This might be the easiest Zachtronics game to get into (aside from the new Visual Novel), but to me it's very pleasing. They give you the tools and solution to the puzzle: you just have to figure out how to get there. There's something very cool about that, and it looks like it has an active community still going. There are challenge puzzles that are published every once-in-a-bit that you can access in game. For me, this game scratches a crafting game unlike any other. It's very satisfying to see a solution come together and then try to optimize it even further.

Pretty, fun, great story, non-violent

This game looks great. Plays like other Zachtronics, but looks a world better than some. As usual, always makes you wonder how much you can improve on your design.

Highly recommend

This is a superb introduction to the puzzle-centric concepts behind most of Zachtronics' games. While some of their works (TIS-100, Spacechem, SHENZHEN I/O etc.) can be very...blunt, this contains a much gentler approach to puzzles, and allows you to seamlessly export gifs to share with other friends that might be interested in trying to beat your best scores. If you're a fan of puzzle games and/or Zachtronics, DEFINITELY pick this one and give it a go!

Only part way though...

But I love it, it doesn't give me headaches like Infinifactory (ah, the trials of motion sickness) and it's much more understandable than Shenzhen I/O, which I need to get back to, but I'm beating my head on a wall in there. I really do enjoy the plot in all of them! And the plot layout in this game is much easier to take in, clear conversations, not random emails, and the like. Feels more interpersonal. And ah, the controls, it feels clear, and how everything lines up, beautiful. Though, the return command doesn't work as advertised If you try to be cheeky and clever and use it in the middle of instruction sequence it won't work at all.
