Description
You're the first pioneer to hit the surface of a barren, alien world - a desolate expanse as far as the eye can see. Your job is simple: Take your Space-RV, power up your multipurpose tech gauntlet, and use whatever seeds found in the cargo to start a new life on this world. Over time, you'll make the planet life-sustaining for yourself and dozens of future colonists. But until then, it's going to be one lonely outpost...
Plan your colonist’s farming adventures. Will you explore? Plant? Craft? FIsh? Build a close-knit community? Or all of them at once?
Fill out the Omninac by experiencing life on the new planet. Categorize crops, minerals, seasons, animals, and more!
Terraform the desert with a trusty robotic pet. Fertilize the ground, secure water sources, and make the air breathable.
Farm, mine, explore, and carve out a habitat for humanity.
Build your colony from the ground up. Your loneliness will be over once you can attract some colonists - but that is just the beginning!
Discover a robust menu of meals to cook - you can't explore a new world on an empty stomach!
A plethora of fish and bugs also inhabit the planet - go uncover them to fill out your collection!
Usher in a new dawn for humanity, building a genuine off-world utopia for your colonists.
Connect with your newfound community, cultivate relationships, and who knows, maybe even find love among the pioneers?
And just as important as the future, delve into the past of the old world. Just what lies hidden beneath this ancient planet's surface...?
Game is super barebones right now. No character customization, unhelpful tutorials, pushing ESC doesn't close the window you are in, basic functions for games like this just straight up don't work, and the tutorials showhow tell you nothing despite telling you what you need to do.
On top of that, the developers are rather advisarial with their Kickstarter backers and customers particularly when the issue was raised on their Discord that the direction the game was going was not what was advertised. On top of that, there is no roadmap for upcoming features which is a red flag to me.
This game should not have been released as a DEMO nevermind a $20 Early Access game. Do not recommend.
The original kickstarter team changed directions a few times before ultimately being handed off to a completely different development team. While they are open on discord, I'd suggest not reading their kickstarter campaign and then trying to hold the new team to the conceptual roadmap. They've stated a few times they are trying to live into the spirit of the original concept but likely won't be able to deliver the planned experience. Saying that, the experience delivered isn't terrible! It wasn't quite what I expected given the KS but its not half bad.
Pros :
Stardew in Space - whats not to like?
Communicative development team
Enough content in the steam demo to form an opinion
Approximately 10-15 hours worth of content if you are like me and like to tinker and not beeline for completion.
Cons:
Some unintuative controls - After 10 games of watering in a straight line, when you get some silly formation it kinda throws you for a loop)
Bugs - Plenty
Escape key doesn't close windows - Discord dev said they will be fixing shortly
$20 is steep for the condition but I'm willing to risk it on the chance they keep making it better. It doesnt' show any signs of abandonment yet. If they stop responding on Discord it'll be a massive red flag but no sign of that.
The premise is interesting and it is satisfying to see the planet become more and more habitable, but many game features are tedious, especially inventory management.
It is annoying to split a stack repeatedly, just to take a few items out of a chest.
Furthermore you have to move something from your hotbar into your inventory if you want to put it into a chest because you cannot interact with your hotbar while interacting with a chest.
Another problem is the shop.
At the moment it is one long list without a discernable order. I recommend to divide the shop into categories and to add a season filter system for seeds.
Finally the way energy needs to be supplied directly from generator to each machine is too restricting. It would be great if it were an energy network.
I was expecting a lot more for the full release of this game. All of the issues I read in reviews from EA are still issues; escape doesn't close windows (in fact it does something weird for me), you can't access the hotbar when accessing storage inventories, something which you're taught to fix as a baby dev on baby's first game on baby dev how-to courses. The game is timegated, and drags forever when you accomplish the ridiculously easy and fast tasks because you have to wait until whatever day the next colonist shows up so they can unlock whatever you're missing be it a blueprint or access to another area. The game will often say "make or do x y and z" but then fail to tell you when you get x y and z accessible. Graveyard Keeper did that a bit but at the LEAST it wasn't timelocked like this, with stretches of time oozing out before you with nothing to do once you water crops (easy and not at all once you get sprinklers) and before you access the mine. Graveyard Keeper's roadblocks were other paths you would have to go down before getting whatever you're missing and then unlock where you're stuck, so you never not have something to do. The tutorials STILL explain what you have to do, while not telling you anything, which is a weird accomplishment. It would be much better if certain steps of quests didn't unlock until the timegate passed so at least you aren't wasting your time going over the map trying to find something you missed.
I really wanted to like this game because I've been waiting for it for a while.
This game is one of those that have an amazing artistic team while the gameplay mechanics are lackluster or underdeveloped.
It's a shame that this still hasn't gotten an update from March when it was released (2025) to fix these issues and improve on the product.
As it is, I feel like I've barely gotten anywhere, I'm halfway into Vernal season, and I'm growing increasingly bored because I have quests I can't complete, with practically nothing to do.
