In a world at war, the vast Empire of Men tries to extend its domination over the territories of the Orcs and Goblins, who are systematically persecuted, enslaved and massacred. Through this great role-playing game, lead a fearsome Orc warrior, and a Goblin master of assassination and stealth.
You have been appointed to fulfill an extremely dangerous mission, deep in enemy territory: to kill one man... the Emperor himself. Fight your way through a terribly hostile world to reach the objective of your quest. Level up, learn and develop powerful skills, and finally free your people from the yoke of the Empire!
The mix of Stealth and Action is the unique aspect of this game, picking off enemies one by one with Styx while Arkail runs into the scene when shit hits the fan.
I wish it had been even more developed in this aspect with Arkail being able to do something during the unalerted stealth moments, like take the guards attention away and have Styx still be able to do his thing.
The story is simple but decent with good voice acting and good music. Both characters have a range of skills and can be approached in different ways.
If you've played the two other Styx games I'd recommend it for the story if not for the gameplay as this is my favorite depiction of said character, he talk a lot but is not an absolute bastard or an amnesiac.
I gotta be honest...one of the main reasons why I like this game is the fact, that you play as a friggin Orc and a Goblin. I always liked this premise, even though it happens so rarely in the gaming industry.
But as many people already said, this game is flawed majorly. The combat is fiddly and cumbersome to the point that you lose fights because of it, especially on harder difficulties. On top of that, you can build wrong and you might have to start over again. I can only recommend playing it with a skill guide on everything over easy difficulty.
The achievements on GoG are buggy. Basically most of the achievements that have to track multiples, like assassinating 47 enemies just don't track and I had GoG manually giving me the achievements that had this problem. So achievement hunters beware!
I like the voice actors, but the sound quality is crunchy, as in not that professional sounding (understandable for the standing of the studio at the time!). I really liked the soundtrack and the ambient soundstage. It kinda reminded me of Gothic.
The story is a little bit artificially convoluted, but serviceable for what they wanted to achieve - telling the story of two green skins! And I loved it!
I can only recommend it if you have a fable for older RPG systems like KOTOR and Dragon Age Origins, but crunchier and of course for people who want to play a Goblin and/or an Orc in games.
The game is fundamentally a mix between a Real Time Strategy and a Hack & Slash game, directing two characters at the same time by telling them what enemy to target and with what skill.
Styx is a goblin who has seen way to much stuff not to be an old cynical sack of swear words, pretty fragile in open combat bu with a lot of debuff skills and the ability to stealth kill enemies who are unaware of him.
Arkail is an idealistic orc warrior with a past of anger that lead him to become a berzerker warrior isolated from everyone. His attacks are much stronger, but they can also be parried or stopped, and if his Rage Bar is filled he'll become uncontrollable until he calms himself down.
The result is a pretty good game that requires to combine the abilities of the two characters to pass enemies that neither would probably be able to handle on their own.
The game is not perfect: it is buggy at times, there writing is weak at times (with a pretty forced and weird handling of a *very* sensitive matter midway into the game), and I can see the gameplay becoming tedious on higher difficulties.
Overall though, it's a really enjoyable game, especially if you're a fan of orcs and goblins non simply being "the bad guys" for once. I do hope to eventually see a sequel to it, perhaps seeing how Arkail and his friends handle the future struggles of the orcish people.
And I say "surprisingly" because, for a game that effectively railroads you across maps - something even FPS have started doing without - this is a very good gaming experience.
The story is entertaining, the protagonists are charismatic (well, one more than the other) but both have their own character arcs, the combat system is different and looks cool, you've got a satisfying number of options to customize your characters' abilities, and the cello-heavy soundtrack somehow manages to work in this setting, with a couple of standout tracks. Can't really ask much more from a (clearly more) Action (than) RPG.
Also, it was a relief to see that, unlike what the unusual premise might lead you to believe, this isn't about "humans bad! religion bad! barbaric nonhumans good!" at all. Quite the opposite, it actually tells a believable and internally consistent tale of oppression and culture clashes, with plenty of shades of gray. Not a narrative masterpiece by any means, but an excellent framework and plot to build an adventure around.
Just finished the game on Easy level, I had heard a lot about how broken some fights were but in the end, with a good build guide, it was easy enough. I had already played the two Styx solo adventures before and loved them. Styx is my favorite gameplay character ever, with his funny and sarcastic way. The orc Arkail is a worthy companion.
I followed a build guide which favors mostly defensive gameplay with high stamina and deflection for Arkail, although you still need some offensive skills because in those few fights where Arkail has to fight alone, he needs to deal at least some damage to come by on his own. Styx is the main damage dealer and has good skills for melee fighting and ranged stance. But having enough hit points (I had 300 in the end) and enough Dodging saved me in some fights where he was on his own.
The story was good as always in a Spider game, with Greedfall my favorite in terms of story and characters. Styx and Arkail are an uneven couple but very funny in their dialogues. Their enemies are rather dull on the other hand. At the beginning, it took me a while to get going in fights because you have to use the strategic overview to calm things down and get used to managing two characters at the same time. Also, the game control with the mouse was too sensitive and unsteady. After I got the knack of the fighting, though, things turned out more brightly and I started to enjoy the game. In the end, I won the fights rather easily.
Not being able to save in between some fights is annoying, and some cut scenes come too sudden, but overall I enjoyed the game. Took me 26 hours to finish it. I have now completed all Spiders games I know of from this one upwards and I like them. And hey, for less than 2 Euros ...?
