Description
You've been detected…
Your ship is exposed…
An alarm blares…
“Torpedo incoming!”

Objects in Space is an open world 2D stealth-action space trading game set in Apollo – a huge cluster of star systems dozens of lightyears away from Earth. You are a ship’s captain, buying and selling wares in order to keep your bucket o' bolts afloat and stay one step ahead of pirates, organised criminals, corrupt governments and shady laws.

A galaxy of characters await you in Objects in Space. The game focuses on a myriad of short stories rather than one main storyline with a hero’s journey, so it’s up to you how much or how little narrative you want in your game.

Combat in Objects sees ships treated more like Cold War submarines than WWII dogfighters. You’ll be running silent, planning manoeuvres far ahead of time and engaging in deadly games of cat-and-mouse with nebulous enemies, but only for those players who seek it out. Combat-averse players can pay attention to the news and avoid pirate-heavy systems and choose not to explore the deadly uncharted areas of space where greater numbers of pirates lurk.

It’ll be up to you to keep your ship’s systems running as quietly as possible, going fully ‘dark’ if you have to, just floating with your current trajectory and speed hoping to avoid showing up on anyone else’s scanners as you traverse some of the most dangerous shipping lanes in space.

To make your money, there are over fifty employers and your reputation with each one will dictate how many passenger, cargo or bounty-hunting contracts are available to you. But be warned - failure to complete a contract might see your rep plummet with that employer. So when you get an SOS signal from a nearby ship but have a deadline to keep, what will you do?

Your ship is completely customisable down to the tiniest component of each module. If your battery dies, it’s your own fault. You decided to go with a cheap Ventarii battery in the first place, and it was out of your stubbornness that you thought a Connext Hap Node when the mechanic recommended a Xiao Sa brand model. Silly you.

You can play it safe in the central systems or design your ship with the ability to outrun, outfight or out-hide your opponents and make your fortune in the outer rims. But be careful! You are just as easily prey as predator in deep space…

Features List:

  • Massive open world to explore full of NPCs to interact with
  • Complex contract-based economic system with over 50 employers
  • Time-based open world - opportunities, stories and events happen at certain times as well as certain places, so each play through will be different
  • Tense submarine-influenced combat
  • Fully customisable ships - design your vessel for combat, shipping, stealth and more
  • Mostly avoidable combat for more pacifistic players
  • A world of side quests - no single linear story players are required to follow
  • Explore 12 hand-crafted populated star and 20 uncharted systems full of unknown threats and treasures
  • Find derelict ships, wreckages, cargo pods and communication beacons adrift in space
  • Be a trader, bounty hunter, explorer, pirate or all of them at the same time
  • Sandbox mode - play the game without narrative content in an endless version of the game (coming soon)
  • Scenarios - tense combat scenarios task the player with overcoming impossible odds and testing their skill (coming soon)
  • Multi-player Scenarios - compete or cooperate in a variety of multiplayer modes and situations (coming soon)
  • Build your own DIY controllers at home using Arduinos - anyone can construct their own ship bridge with physical switches and buttons with just a little bit of soldering know-how. Easy to learn and fun to do!

A great game for people looking for more

When I booted up the game I thought I had made a bit of a bad purchase. The start of the game gave me the impression that the entire game would be staring at computer screens and reading, however I couldn't have been more wrong. Once I got out of the tutorial and into the game proper I was shocked. The amount of variety this game has is staggering. The different models of ship you get actually matter as their layouts are different, which seems like a small detail but makes the game feel very realistic, despite the intentionally low-res graphics. The main gameplay loop can be multiple different styles. I, being terrified of damaging my shiny new piece of space junk, decided to strike it rich being a merchant, however you can be a pirate, bounty hunter, or space taxi, all of which involve different strategies. The in-game economy seems a bit lackluster at first but it's actually really interesting. As you play you get a feel for what each system is good at producing and what they want. You can figure out trading by brute force, I.E. buying a bunch of different stuff and trying to see what it sells for in different system, or you can try to figure it out through in-game news or other info. HOWEVER, AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! Travel in the early game takes a long time. A very long time. This might sound like a downside but this means this game is great as a relaxant. I can come home from work, throw this on in the background, put on a youtube video and just relax while traveling, which is what I think this game's best strength is. I cannot recommend this game highly enough for anyone looking for an experience they can just put on and enjoy while relaxing. Yes you can play the game as a high octane space simulator if you want but the combat is very submarine feeling, which I liked but some will probably hate. TL;DR Good game if you wanna relax as a merchant, good game if you wanna play as a pirate or bounty hunter. Fun game with variable styles

An unfinished and broken game

This game had a lot of potential, but game worlds depth is pretty shallow. In games like this, the drive is usually to gain bigger and better ships with more capabilities, but unfortunately there just isn't a whole lot more you can do other than what you are given in the beginning. Everything in this game felt like it should be the beginning of every branching path, not the entire path; there just isn't that much progression. On top of that, the game has some game mechanic breaking bugs. For example, one of the most accessible ways of earning cash in this game is to haul cargo from port to port...but there is a bug that prevents you from stacking same items in each cargo slot...so I'll have 15 computer cargo total taking up 4 slots, when each slot can hold 20. This happens because they refuse to stack and you can't do anything about it. This bug severely hampers your ability to load up lots of cargo to sell to stations, and causes you to run out of space very fast even though you still have a lot of space to use. I hate saying this because the game itself looks like it had such potential, but a couple of flaws like I mentioned (which should be pretty easy to fix) in the wrong places in this game makes it feel like the game is being passive-aggressive towards you for trying to play it in the first place. Darn shame.

DO NOT BUY, it's not a full release

It's said to be a full release and apparently from march 2019, so there shouldn't be essential parts missing. I like the premise so I bought it, BIG mistake. I'm not substracting anything for the graphics which are only slightly better than games from the 1990s. Though even 2.5 years after release the GUI doesn't work correctly, the mouse cursor moves with stutters (even with 4times the recommended RAM and graphics memory and with), buttons randomly do not respond, as far as i can tell you only are able to undock with a single shiptype, all others are missing the undock button. There are still interfaces "coming soon" and some interfaces prevent you from buying/taking/using stuff in another save, i'm speaking about components and trade goods (if you bought something in one of them you are only able to get the leftovers in another) and contracts (same as with components), replying to mail (yes, you can only reply to a message once over ALL saves), quest states do not reset between games too... And did i mention the CTDs? The state the game is can hardly be called even only a beta years after full release... Therefore BEWARE, DO NOT BUY!

Heartbreaking abandonware

This game is such a disappointment - not because it's a bad game, but because of what it could have been. It's such a brilliant idea, great retro design, such an interesting universe to explore, the control method of flight is the best I've seen in any space sim - but it's broken, buggy, unfinished, and abandoned. Some examples are horrible ui design - one of the more important aspects of the game is upgrading components in your ship - but basic things such as comparing them can't be done in the store. You can't infact even check what you have installed in your ship without actually looking at them. You can move around your ship, and while some rooms are important - the engine room lets you change and repair modules for example - some however are essentially useless. Presumably future updates would have added functionality, but they exist now only as a reminder of what could have been. Game elements are limited - combat and the management of onboard systems seem the most fleshed out - trade, exploration, and missions seem the least and are very basic and somewhat broken in various ways. The game suffers from slowdown after extended play, and semi-regular crashes. It seems to be poorly optimized. Ultimately this game is a diamond in the rough that will never be polished. It has such potential, while in early access I wholeheartedly recommended it as a unique and brilliant space sim that just needed some work to reach it's potential. As it stands however it just can't justify the price tag and is just a crying shame. Two stars because it's still such a unique game despite its flaws. Hopefully one days the devs will pick it back up or perhaps another team will be inspired by the ideas here.

Amazing Potential, Sadly Abandoned.

Playing the game is fabulous. I love the ship UI. Makes me feel like a salty old pilot sailing the stars. The gamplay loop is reasonably fun too, and there can be some very tense encounters. Unfortunately, reading through the game's reviews here and elsewhere it's been abandoned juuuust on the cusp of achieving technical stability and possibly even greatness. Others have covered the faults better than I can - please do read through. But in the meantime do NOT waste your money on this. It's a nifty tech demo but not much more.
