A more relaxed indie physics platformer

3.5 stars. NyxQuest features a Greek mythology setting/story, and you control both the main character, Nyx (who has limited flying and gliding abilities, which form the basis of the platforming side of things), and the 'hand of Zeus' with which you assist her by throwing blocks around and such forth (oh yes, bow down before the awesome block-moving powers of the Father of the Gods!) It's a fairly relaxed kind of platformer, without any pixel-perfect jumping required (thank goodness), and I found the flight-based movement to be an enjoyable change. It's not that you can't easily mess up in this game; merely that the chances of doing so once you know what you want to do are much less than in some other games; so while it is challenging at times, it's rarely ever really tough. Gameplay has enough variety to keep things interesting, with a handful of different sorts of environmental interactions that you must learn to perform whilst you manoeuvre Nyx about the levels. The graphics are lovely. Audio is nice, if not especially remarkable. The English translation (for subtitles) is a little lacking, but the story isn't all that prevalent, so it's not really an issue. Performance was generally silky smooth on a machine which was old by 2010 standards, so I would expect no issues at all on a more recent machine. It took me a little over 6 hours to complete, and with only 12/20 of the secret items (which you can replay levels to look for), so there's good value for money here. Definitely worth a look for fans of physics platform games. It's not Trine; but if you enjoy that style of game then NyxQuest may prove to be an enjoyable little addition to your collection.

initially enjoyable, tedious at the end

indie physics games can often be quite hit or miss, largely due to physics puzzles being a difficult thing to manage without them either being tedious or difficult in ways that the player can't always deal with this initailly was actually quite fine, I was even able to play it with a game pad for most of the way with the platforming and physics stuff being easy to manage. it was quite definitly a plesant stress free experience. towards what I presume is the end however, things got too much for me to handle, with me needing to simultaneously carry physics objects around, do platforming and avoid an instant death gaze attacks, that weren't always functioning properly, all at once, with spaced out checkpoints slowing me down even more. I ended up having to quit at that point as I didn't really feel that there was enough to pull me through that frustration, which is a shame, cause I otherwise wouldn't have a lot to fault this game with

First half fun, second half tedious

Initially the game is fun. Nice puzzles, some mechanics are added and used over the course of the first levels. However, then the game regresses into tedious repetition. That is made worse by the inability to save the game and the checkpoints being too far apart. So you'll replay the same boring stretch again and again, until you get the timing right. The graphics are initially nice too, but the scenario never changes. You always trot through greek ruins in a desert. I guess at this price once can't expect a masterpiece, but the second part of the game is just a chore and not entertaining.

Nice little gem

I really enjoyed Nyx. It reminded me of the Trine games, though the color palette and world design are more adjusted to the Greek setting. In any case, Nyx is very beautiful to look at. As the game progresses, Nyx gains in power while every level introduces at least one new gameplay element or idea, keeping the game interesting until the end. There are some challenging areas, but overall the game is very forgiving and relaxed. Careful exploration is rewarded and there are hidden secrets to find along the path. If you like side-scrolling platformers (and are not looking hardcore masochistic difficulty), you should try Nyx.

A fun puzzle platformer

Well worth it's very low price! The controls are simple and easy to learn, and as you progress through the levels the game gets more and more difficult. It never got so difficult that it became frustrating, but difficult enough that it wasn't boring either :) The art is clean and beautiful and the music is outstanding :)
