Description
An excellent action/RPG hybrid with very unique gameplay. Your name is Jack Mower, a 20th century dude who just happened to be sucked into the world of Nox via his TV set. The world is in danger and you have to save it! But before you embark on your epic journey you must choose your path: warrior, wizard, or conjurer.

Choose the path of a warrior, and you will be able to equip and use all manner of swords, battle-axes, war hammers, and chakrams - though you’ll leave the magical mumbo-jumbo up to the Conjurer and Wizard classes. An enchanted weapon is the closest a Warrior gets to magic but that’s OK, because magic is for sissies.

As a Wizard you will explore the mystical art of spell casting, ranging from enemy-confounding illusions to devastating displays of metaphysical force. You’ll also learn to set magical traps containing deadly spell combinations to thwart the unsuspecting foe. Although you’ll have to renounce the use of ungainly swords and armor in the name of your art, you will still be able to wield a staff as a last-ditch physical defense.

If you choose a Conjurer you will be able to magically charm and summon creatures to do your bidding. You can even create a magical creature called a bomber which can wreak sorcerous havoc on your enemies. You’ll also get plenty of experience wielding staves and bows to fend off the few enemies who manage to slip past your minions.

Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Kilg0re_Tr0ut from GOG Stream Team: Nox is a truly underrated game from Westwood Studios. Often written off as a "Diablo-clone", this is really a unique quest oriented action RPG. You play Jack, a young man who (along with his TV) is accidentally teleported to Nox by the evil Hecubah, and it is your job to right things in Nox and eventually defeat her. The story and gameplay adapts to accommodate one of three different character classes you have to choose from, the Warrior, who can't use magic, but has access to all armor and weapon types (except bows and staves), the Conjurer, who can use bows and crossbows, can use some spells, but specialize in summoning monsters that can fight alongside them, and the Wizard class, who specialize in the vast majority of spells in the game, and can even teleport and become invisible. This adds tremendous replayability as playing the game with each character makes for a completely different experience, basically giving you three games in one. Easy to get into, Nox is highly recommended for fans of the genre."

Mediocre, at best

Not much replayability - yea, every class has it's own beginning and a couple of unique quests, but the rest is the same. The lack of merchants able to repair equipment in the late game is really irritating, fighting the necromancer in tattered rags was a fun challenge, though; dungeons are long and tedious and the capacity system curbs loot hoarding urges (most of the time it's impossible to backtrack and grab more stuff). The plot is just bland: no unique, memorable characters or choices, weird ending and it's kinda short (6-8h, depends on class you choose). What I find really good is the music and graphics, both are very nostalgic and atmospheric, even the voice acting was fine. Runs well on Windows 10 without additional fixes, runs even better on OpenNox engine.

A Timeless Classic

This game comes from a time when "you're the hero of a fantasy world go and save it" was still not cliché, but still it has enough fresh and interesting things to cautivate anyone who pays attention and doesn't play it like it was a modern game or expect as such. Still this game impresses in the creativity department because of it's gameplay and world, it has many mechanics that even today are not common in games. It has a bestiary which you need to fill to gain info and advantages (like mind control) by collecting scrolls. The summoning/pet system is simple and useful. It has item durability, which makes you always consider having a spare weapon. There's tons of loot and things to buy. There are many side activities Entire towns to explore FREELY The world is populated and feels alive, an example of this is that when you walk past a tavern you can hear the peoples ruckus, but the moment you enter they shut up and look at you (as you would expect them to do when a stranger walks in) Exploration rewards you from things like experience to powerful spells/items. There are 3 starts but at a certain point the story is the same. I find this to be a Win because I hate having to play through a game several times to get the experience of all characters. I rather just experience the start again and if I like it I can simple get to that point and drop it if I'm not feeling the new class. Overall, this game is freaking amazin and kicks ass now as it did back in the day.

Nox, great fun from the past!

I remember playing this one from a ten dollar bargain bin purchase about 10 years ago. It was awesome and addictive then, and should be now. Compares favorably to more recent games like the Sacred series, and what really gives this title wings is the excellent multi-player. Buy it!

Well played GOG! Another great gem!

This game is very enjoyable and has a unique style all to its own. Very pleased to see it available again. I have a collection of old PC things, games and such, that I occasionally will try to clean out and throw away the things I know I won't need anymore. Nox is in there but every time I pick it up, I can't bring myself to pitch it, just too many fond memories.

Great fun, don't miss it

... especially at GOG prices! Not just a dungeon crawl, this one is a little tongue in cheek, with great humor throughout. Do *not* pass this up!
