Description

Lose yourself in the world of New York, 2329, where immortality comes at a price that someone has to pay. Following a near-death experience, Detective James Karra takes an off-the-books case from his chief with only the help of a young police liaison, Sara Kai, to assist him. Time reveals all as they risk everything in pursuit of a killer, uncovering the dark secrets of the city's elite.

Experience a noir adventure in an alternate future of New York City in 2329; technology has advanced to offer humans eternal life, allowing consciousness to be stored in memory banks or transferred from one body to another. That is, if you can afford the subscription.

See through the eyes of Mortality Department Detective James Karra on his hunt for a serial killer who targets the city’s elite citizens. Investigate crime scenes using his time manipulation augmentation and advanced technology to reconstruct events leading up to each murder and uncover clues that lead to the horrifying truth behind the murders.

Lose yourself in a dystopian future through this meaningful and original interactive detective story, that explores the dangers of transhumanism and immortality. In a world of eternal life and vanishing morality, you, a hardened detective, must navigate the lines of right and wrong in a society where death is a distant memory.

Utilising the power of Unreal Engine 5, Nobody Wants to Die pushes the boundaries of storytelling, combining photorealistic graphics and a distinctly unique narrative experience.

Strong Movie, Lacklustre Game

The game has very impressive visuals. If you don't have a computer capable of running those visuals at full capacity, you are probably not getting your money's worth out of this game. Buy it on sale. The story is interesting, the characters are good, and the world is surprisingly complex for such a short narrative (I mean--I personally found the dialogue a bit trite by the end but I'm a harsh grader on that front). But the gameplay really hurts the experience. This is essentially a walking simulator with a shallow pretense of puzzle-solving (mostly through "crime scene reconstructions" or "deductive board" style sequences) where the game never, not through its whole run, stops holding your hand and telling you exactly what to do and when. The mechanics are just too easy and railroaded for the actual gameplay to be fun or interesting. I was originally going to cut it some slack on the basis that there's a surprising amount of exploration and reactivity, at least in the first half. Looking at different parts of the world can unlock new dialogue options, a lot of room is made for environmental storytelling, and making certain choices can have marginal impact on the story. But there are just so, SO many instances where the game takes control from you. So many cutscenes where your only input, when finally allowed, is to just walk forward while the characters monologue at you. In a game much longer and more open than this one it probably wouldn't have been that bad but my ability to actually play the game is so limited I felt like my time was being wasted. When I finally reached the ending, I discovered that I had gotten the bad one, based solely on a single dialogue choice (one that seemed kind of arbitrary at the time) that I had made about an hour ago and had long since overwritten the autosave for. I realized I had 0 desire whatsoever to replay the game for the good ending. It's not terrible. It's good for what it is, and it's short so it's not going to eat up a lot of your time. But the gameplay being so boring makes it kind of a slog to get through if you're not 100% invested in the narrative it's delivering. Even for a walking sim, it's kind of irritating when you're just trying to get from point A to point B and the protagonist is constantly stopping to have another drawn out hallucination sequence that tells us very little we haven't already gleaned from the opening cutscene.

Detective fiction, not a detective game

Here's the MOST important thing to know. This isn't a detective game, so much interactive detective fiction. I know the detective itch well. This will not scratch it. GOOD STUFF: + Art & atmosphere - Nothing else looks like this + Characters - getting past the archetypical surfaces of the two main characters, they have more charm and depth than either let on at first. (James is more interesting when you realize that he's literally trying to act like a typical noir protagonist in a lot of ways) + World-building - of course immortality would be commoditized, but NWtD recognizes that it would be a lot more complex than "only the rich would benefit." That being said, it still felt like I had an incomplete picture at the end, I'd have liked to have seen more of the system in action. NOT-SO-GOOD STUFF: - On-rails investigation - I emphasize that this is detective *fiction* because it's more concerned with keeping pace than giving you a challenge. The game basically tells you at every step how to progress the investigation. Coming off of a game like Scene Investigators, it was disappointing and almost kind of insulting. Yes, it does have these "murder board" segments that free you up a bit, but those are short and brute-forceable. Once I realized I was basically just hitting really slow QTEs to "solve" crimes I started losing interest... which admittedly might be why... - You'll get the bad ending - probably - and then you'll have to replay the whole thing to get the one that doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth. What's worse is it felt like punishment for not reading the writers' minds, and had nothing to do with the more obvious choices throughout the game. - Surprisingly hard-to-follow near the end for how little it lets you think for yourself. I'm going to ASSUME I missed some details and locked myself out of the "good" ending that might have explained more. Overall, decent purchase on sale. Maybe look up a guide to get the good ending first.

Gorgeous, interesting and a little jank

A interesting story and some amazing locales, wrapped in a little bit of charming indie jank. Highly recommended

Beautiful Game

A beatiful game, and I don't only mean the graphics. It's somehow very "reduced", the gameplay is simple, there is not too much interaction with the world... but still it manages to grab you. The atmosphere is great, the characters are interesting, and it stayed interesting until the end. Great voice acting, too. Took me around 8 hours to finish. Fully enjoyed it. :)
