A NEW TWIST TO THE SIDE-SCROLLING NINJA GAIDEN SERIES EXPERIENCE

From the acclaimed team behind Blasphemous, NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound successfully unites the classic lore and gameplay of the Tecmo-developed (now KOEI TECMO GAMES) NINJA GAIDEN series from the classic era with the depth and intensity of the modern 3D entries. The best of both eras come together to create an epic and thrilling adventure.

DIVE INTO AN UNTOLD CHAPTER OF THE NINJA GAIDEN SAGA

Our story begins when Ryu Hayabusa journeys to America to honor his father's will. While he is away, the barrier between the human and the demon worlds suddenly shatters, unleashing a terrifying army upon the Hayabusa Village, which now faces an unprecedented threat in Ryu's absence.

To stand against this new threat, Kenji Mozu, a young ninja from the Hayabusa Village, rises to the challenge! Trained by Ryu, he fights fiercely but soon finds himself in desperate straits. Forced to tap into forbidden power, Kenji sets aside centuries of animosity and forms an alliance with the sinister Black Spider Clan, convinced that combining their souls and skills is the only way to protect the world out of the Demon Lord's grasp!

OLD SCHOOL GAMEPLAY WITH A BRAND-NEW POLISH

Combining old-school feeling with modern precision, NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound retains the pick-up-and-play action of the classic titles, while introducing new layers of depth.

Alongside the new protagonist, Kenji Mozu, is the skilled assassin Kumori. Take control of these two powerful ninjas simultaneously and unravel their interconnected stories.

Use the Ninja Fusion to unleash devastating abilities and obliterate your enemies. NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound features impeccable mechanics that are easy to learn but hard to truly master, challenging the skills of even the most seasoned fans of the NINJA GAIDEN series!

A SPECTACULAR PIXEL ART SHOWDOWN

Step into a reimagined version of the classic NINJA GAIDEN universe, brought to life through stunning, meticulously crafted visuals. Every enemy is recreated with a level of detail that was once impossible.

The brutal, nostalgia-filled aesthetic of NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound pays homage to the past while pushing the boundaries of modern pixel art, making every battle a feast for the eyes.

Do you have what it takes to become a true ninja master?

Beautiful albeit a bit frustrating...

Game has beautiful pixel art, the music is fantastic and extremely unique, I found myself humming the themes long after finishing my sessions, and the replayability of the game is a beauty. The game does have some issues with difficulty spikes happening early on, like the levels are easy, but the bosses can be brutal at times and require multiple tries, thankfully there are assist settings you can enable at any point that allow you to control the speed of the game, up to even changing things like disabling knock-back or even giving yourself invulnerability if you so choose. What I love is that the developers don't punish you for using the assist settings, you can easily 100% the game with those options enabled, but there'll still be some challenging platforming sections that don't get more than mitigated in their challenge thanks to those options. I wish the devs had consider those stages when deciding to implement the assist settings, but I'm happy with what they've got here for the most part. After you beat the game you get to unlock costumes and a hard mode which I found pretty cool, beating the hard mode grants you a secret ending and a boss rush mode that you can replay at your hearts content. Overall, you're looking at a game that offers endless replayability because of the way it's structured. I really appreciate above all else that this is a title that demonstrates The Game's Kitchen ability for maturity and growth in their philosophy of their games, something I hadn't seen in their previous Blasphemous games for example. Ninja Gaiden Ragebound demonstrates a prioritization of fun over mindless challenge, but without sacrificing those ideals either; they crafted something for themselves that simultaneously is accessible to all players. Want more challenge? Play on hard mode or equip a hard talisman that provides you with a better score. Want an easier time? Enable the assist settings and have fun. I really like that.

Anyway the game is fast paced and lots of fun. The pixel art is superb and the music is great too.

Yes, it's quite difficult.

But maybe not too difficult. After all, I saw people speedrunning this thing without getting hit a single time mere days after the game released. Perhaps I just suck at video games. In which case, maybe this will also be too hard for you. Does that mean you should ignore this if you think it looks cool? No. While it is quite difficult it's still an enjoyable experience. But you should have known that coming from the team that brought you Blasphemous. In fact it almost feels bizarre playing this after years of Metroidvanias with upgrade pathways. You are provided with a reasonably varied toolset of moves and are told "that's it. Go finish this." So it feels a bit strange attempting to double jump only to be reminded that doesn't exist in this game. Not that I'm complaining. It does, for the most part, feel like a fast & fluid platformer with roots in the original Ninja Gaiden. I'm only speculating here since I never really played any of those but I can say that the best way to play this is rushing forward, swinging your sword with abandon and making precision jumps through the stage as fast as possible. Almost as though you yourself ARE the ninja. You must become one with your gamepad. I think perhaps my biggest complaint here is the music, however. I mean, it's competent but I can't really say I love it. It's perfectly adequate hard rock. Maybe it's a little progressive. You know, it's fine. It certainly doesn't have the same urgency that the classic NES soundtrack does. Maybe I'll see how well it plays to that and get back to you on that one. Still, it's a pretty damn good game. My gut says to give this one 4 stars but I feel like I'd be doing that solely because of personal issues I had. I think most people who enjoy this genre and give this one a shot are definitely going to have a great time with it. If it looks cool to you, grab a copy. if $25 USD is too steep, I would say to wait for a sale but it's for sure worth picking up.

Not your daddy's Ninja Gaiden

Short and focused experience like it should be, but this is definitely not a continuation of the 8bit titles in mechanics or story, if that is what you're looking for. Instead, what we get is a precise action platformer that keeps you on your toes at all points, and feels great to execute a chain of attacks that blast through enemy ranks. The level design tests how well you have mastered the new attacks and movement. Thankfully, the difficulty curve is fair. By the end, it can be pretty tough, but the game never throws anything at you blind or tests any skills you haven't already learned. It can be a bit more "modern" than I prefer, though. Every stage has collectibles to search for and your performance is graded depending how much you grabbed on one run, plus optional challenges, and completion time. Some of those challenges you only get one shot at, or else start the entire level over. You might ignore it altogether if not for the fact that ability unlocks are dependent on achieving high ranks. Still, from start to finish, the purposeful level design and responsive controls make for a fun experience. Classic fans should have no problem clearing it, and there is more to do like 100% completion, S++ ranks and post-game Hard Mode if you decide to go after them.

Excellent 2D action game

The controls are very responsive and the music is top notch. Really enjoying playing a 2D Ninja Gaiden game. Looking forward to series return and perhaps another 2D game in this style.
