Lovely in places but...

Control scheme not rebindable (WASD for movement + Space/Shift for jump + E for actions and sometimes left click for a different actions). There are levels where directions of movements will change (so 'S' becomes 'left' instead of 'back/down'). Movements themselves aren't very precise but the game requires quite a lot of precise first-person platforming and without even being able to see the character's legs it creates some frustration, especially when checkpoint in that section is badly located. There is an especially irritating ice level where you'd have to do a lot of jumping on a tiny surfaces while your movements on that level have increased slide, so it is easy to slip and start all over again. There is no manual save option and game only gives one save slot for autosave anyway, so two people cannot play this game at the same time. Checkpoints are mostly ok but in several places they aren't and game becomes very frustrating. There is one _incredibly_ annoying chase level when failure at any of stage of the chase will reset the whole chase, even if those stages aren't big it isn't a nice level to play. Puzzles are mix and there are some nice ones but many are quite simple. Some additional efforts (puzzle or platforming) are usually needed to find collectable teddy bears. So far I've met a couple of situations where it was needed to throw an object into specific position but this process doesn't handle itself well and it is mostly luck and retries. At some point one of the objects got stuck and it was impossible to recover it without restart of the level. In general, I have an impression that physics are not very reliable. Game has just three options: screen resolution, fullscreen yes/no and vsync yes/no. No sliders for sounds, no choice to rebind the keys, no antialiasing or special effects of any kind. While I like aesthetics quite a lot, without any kind of video enhancements it looks a bit dated. Music is very good, sometimes excellent.

Dream too long, wake before completion

Niko is an abstract and minimalist game that starts out looking like a walking sim with occasional puzzles. Exploration however is rewarded with hidden items, at least early on. But as you progress the puzzles overtake the walking, and then further in the platforming overtakes the puzzles. But first, the good points. There is a lot of variety in the environments; it doesn't stay a stark white landscape the whole time. The early levels are individualist and beautiful, and the music that goes with them is perfectly crafted. Likewise the puzzles are clever and never too difficult if you take the time to fully explore your surroundings. Unfortunately, the game reaches what should be its climax, but then keeps going on. The levels after this point largely cease to be interesting or fun (apart from a graveyard and a dark forest). Annoying jumping puzzles become the norm, and the smart respawn points you get accustomed to early in the game disappear, leaving you to replay whole difficult sections over and over. By the time you get to the "remote control the glowing orb" section you'll be ready for the game to end, but instead it continues further with even worse levels. The interesting landscapes vanish, as does the evocative music, and you are left churning through level after level of a tedious platform puzzler with no payoff, the compelling parts of the story having ended a while back. When I started playing this game I was ready to give it five stars. By the time I quit that evening it was down to four. Resuming it the next day and encountering what is probably the worst jumping sequence yet, with terrible controls and being only the first sequence of many, I have removed another star. While I'm all for a game that gives you a lot of content, this is one case where judicious pruning would have made this a better game. Instead you have a lovely dream that turns into frustrating slog long after you should have woken.

Ok-ish minimalistic 3d-platformer-puzzle

First of all, let's explain what this game is not: it's not myst, it's not portal, it's not "walking simulator" either. Most of its "puzzles" do not require hard logic. They are either movement based, 3d-platforming ones. Or exploration based. There are a few logical ones, but frankly, they are extremely basic. This game is great at minimalistic art. This game also has great music and overall nice feel. However it is lacking in gameplay, a little bit of polish and sometimes it's not great at explaining itself (yeah, it's just an "art piece", I get it, but explain why do I look for those stuffed bears, why do I have to look for pieces of story, do I even need to find those, will something change?). None of that is explained. True. it can be said, that it's deliberate. But it doesn't add to the game. It doesn't add to "mystic", it adds to "bewilderment". Overall, it's ok. But nothing to be extremely exited about. A good indie platformer-puzzler, that has good minimalistic style. P.S. The "puzzle", where you have to move blocks to push the button. I managed to completely bypass it by stacking them in a ladder and climbing outside of "bounds" and just march on top of the rails. I dunno, if that was intended, but I felt proud as hell. Love finding unusual solutions (even if they require more work, than normal ones).

Not exactly a game...

Not exactly a game - it rather looks like an extended demo. Some quite easy to solve puzzles, that's all. Main point of the whole thing seems to be its minimalistic artworks, but if you have experimented with 3D world simulators, you know that's not difficult to accomplish. I can't recommend this game, sorry.
