Description
Neverwinter Nights: Pirates of the Sword Coast is a swashbuckling Dungeons & Dragons journey on the high seas. Experience multiple endings, cunning henchmen, and a rollicking tale of woe!
As a sailor aboard the Midnight Rose merchant ship, you’ve stopped in the city of Neverwinter to gather supplies before a long trip south. A most peculiar course of events follows, slowly unraveling a plot of whale-sized proportions.
Stability and modernization changes (which is what Beamdog does) take time and effort, and aren't free. Modules for an old game that were shared many years ago don't always run stably on modern equipment, and often need other changes that we, as gamers, probably shouldn't expect for free.
I found the $2.99 price point to be reasonable given what we're getting; a modernized version of this module that runs without issue.
I've not finished the module yet, but I want to write e quick review based only on first impressions.
The overall mood is very different from other modules I've played: it is less dark and very "light", there are some situations that remind me very closely the old Monkey Island adventure games: the clash between the two thieves guilds in the harbor, the gathering of a crew to sail from the island, the many (awesome!) treasure maps, the shipwrecking and survival struggle, and in general the jolly and humorous atmosphere. It also reminds me the good "Lankhmar Nights" module (freely available on the Neverwinter Vault website).
In these situations, killing foes is not the primary objective and thus you gain many XPs simply advancing in the plot, but there are also some fierce fights that require planning and tactical skills. I've chosen - as usual - my favorite character class, a female human rogue/ranger (and future shadowdancer), but some fighter levels may help since you need a good amount of hit points to survive some encounters.
I've bought the module at discounted price, and certainly it is worth every single cent.
It wasn't even free with the Diamond Edition. You actually paid something like $4.99-9.99 for it, at least you did in the late '00s. This game is well worth the 3 dollars and if you got your hands on it for free at some point and still care enough to chime in about it, then 3 dollars isn't going to ruin your world.
This is the best premium module I've tried so far. It gave me a full pirate experience, with treasure maps, survival on a desert island, and evil powers lurking underneath the sea. Maybe the Undersea part could have been developed more, but the plot itself was more interesting than in some of the highest praised modules. Haven't encountered any bugs, maybe aside from evil pirate overlord having too low persuasion check - but maybe he just likes half-orc ladies who can hit hard.
If you want something fun to spend one or two evenings, try it out. It's really worth its price.
