Description
Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game inspired by the developer's actual battle with mental illness.

In the game, you take on the role of Thomas who awakens from a terrible nightmare only to find that he is still dreaming. As he descends deeper through the layers of hellish dreamscapes, he must hide from horrifying apparitions and outrun his inner demons. He must discover which of the horrors he encounters are a manifestation of his own psychological state and figure out what reality will be when he finally wakes up.
  • Terrifying nightmare worlds inspired by real life struggles with OCD and depression.
  • Black and white artwork creates a distinctive moody and dark atmosphere.
  • Branching narrative features 3 completely different endings.

Artfully Indie

Personally enjoyed my time with it so far (about 3 hours for 1st completion). There are 3 total endings, so I will likely go back to try for the others. I recommend this if you like very interesting visual style stories, with a little bit of game play elements. This is mature/gory, so be warned if that turns you off. Generally, you will be wandering around in a fairly well guided experience (you shouldn't get lost and have to figure out what to do next). There are a few sections with stealth or "running away" game play elements and only a few real choices that I could see so far. Music/sound is very good and fits the tense setting. A few jump scares which were very well done. After completing the game once, you do not have to redo it from the beginning to try for the other endings, which is nice. For me the detailed backgrounds, pictures made it fun to wander along and is likely why I took 3 hours (many say they've done it in 2 hours). My bias is towards these short, visual indie games that seem to be coming out a lot lately (The Cat Lady, Little Inferno, type stuff).

Lots of good elements but held back

Let me start off by saying I love horror games. I've played a large amount of horror games from Amnesia to older Penumbra games, SOMA, Outlast, Alien: Isolation, etc. so I do love the genre. This is a very strange, creepy horror game. The art style is unique, the sound design is amazing for a horror game, the attention to detail on many aspects of the design is really something to take interest in. I just love the line shading in this game, it really sets it apart from every other game I've played. Unfortunately, there's a lot of aspects that hold the game back. Combine extremely mundane repetitiveness, nearly similar areas you see over and over again (to the point where I started avoiding the doors in the hallways just because all the rooms were empty), an extremely short playthrough, and three terrible endings nearly kill this game. I would never recommend this game for $15 for something that I beat in less than 90 minutes (and I usually take my time with any game). If you can get it for $5 give it a shot

Walking

Walking, walking, walking, look, walking, running, walking.... The right arrow of my keyboard is now used, and I haven't played anything. This is not a game. It could be a story, but I've lost interest before getting there.

Cool looking but flawed game

A slow plodding game with almost no actual game machanics. Cool artwork and a nice horror atmosphere that sadly dissappears with boring repetitive gameplay. Uninterresting storyline and i could not muster up any sympathy with the protagonist. Got some very good jumpscares.

Lots of potential, disappointing result

Neverending Nightmares is a title I really wanted to like, since it has so many things I would normally consider up my alley, such as gore and disturbing images. Unfortunately, the final product is underwhelming at best. The Positives -Unique art style. -An interesting premise. -Decent -though limited- soundtrack. The Negatives -The story. It is difficult to create a story that leaves most questions left unanswered that remains engaging. Unfortunately, NN is too abstract for my taste and left me feeling like there was very little to take away from it except from some disturbing scenes. Enjoyable as they may be, that is not enough for me. -The gameplay sections. If you are going to include gameplay in your story-focused game make sure it is more than a nuisance, which is exactly how it felt here. NN may be worth a try if you find it in a really good sale but it is not worth the full price. I still hope we see more games from this creator because their vision has the potential for something good.
