I wake one night to find a thief fleeing my camp after tripping the noise alarm. I leap to my feet and grab my only weapon (a fire hardened spear made from a tree branch) and give chase into the night.
Despite the raging storm i soon catch up and promptly stab him to death breaking my spear in the process. I roll his prone corpse over only to discover that the sole item he'd stolen was a small lengh of string...
Feeling slightly embarassed I turn to leave only to be attacked by a feral dog. After punching it for what felt the hours i suddenly had a eureka moment!
"Im not unarmed" I thought "I have a perfectly good saucepan"
With that i commenced to serve up the mother of all post apocalyptic a** whoopings.
My victory would be short lived however as the following day i s**t myself to death from dysentry due to drinking puddle water...
What a gem of a game! Other reviews will praise the game elements plenty (and you the reader should take heed of it, because it's true), but I'd like to throw a bone at something which may likely go unnoticed: storytelling quality.
It's overall quite good, but some passages are very. very well-written, to the point of taking a few moments to re-read the paragraph and actually depicting the scene in my head. Very talented penmanship there. And to the writer(s), I'll buy your book if you get down to write one.
I like the post apocalyptic cyberpunk influence of this game. Gameplay is good , take some getting used to and learning curve but that is part of the fun for me since its an exploration game.
There are still some bugs and that is why I only give 4 stars.
There are a variety of character builds possible but I think some are not as viable because of balance issues (some skills are rather useless compared to others)
Overall fun game and deserves the recommendations
If you are a fan of turn-based strategy and tactics games, adventure games, and TRUE survival games (not that fake trash like Rust or Ark) then get this game. It is an excellent, challenging and deep but still digestible game. It's so satisfying slower watching your scavenger getting fitted in the most mismatched assortment of gear and clothing equipped with a rusty crowbar and a bow with three arrows on his back. The game itself reflects the gameplay experience as it appears to be put together by the software equivalent of thread and duct tape but at least it will run on anything. Very fun experience highly recommended, but only to those who can enjoy a game without all the spectacle and excitement of most popular games. It is very much a game for avid readers and survival enthusiasts.
Let me preface by saying that I've only played this game for about 4 hours, so I haven't experienced it thoroughly.
I basically never write reviews for anything, but I felt the urge to with this title. I absolutely love the hardcore survival genre. For example, the Fallout games are definitely fun to play, but there isn't enough challenge with them. New Vegas' "hardcore" mode was laughable at best. This is definitely hardcore survival, but it's a different type of "hardcore."
If you're like me, then you've played many other hardcore survival games. By far the best I've tried is an indie title called UnReal World. It takes place in ancient Finland, rather than the near future. It's much more based on graphics (although they're not very good) rather than text, like Neo Scavenger is.
Some key differences between the two: in UnReal World (URW), you could go weeks without seeing another person or animal. In Neo, you're constantly surrounded by them. In URW, most people/animals are either friendly or try to get away from you. In Neo, they come after you and try to kill you. Neo is much harder to stay alive in, at least so far that I've played. Maybe I have yet to figure out some of the survival tricks. It's much easier to find food and water in Neo, but the sheer number of creatures coming after you makes it very difficult. It can also be quite hard to stay warm. In URW, hunger is a huge issue, but staying warm and avoiding danger is easier. Lastly, URW has no story. You're just some guy trying to stay alive in the harsh wilderness. Neo has a story.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of heavy text-based games. If I wanted to read a bunch, I'd crack open a book. Neo has a lot of reading involved. During particularly long-winded text scenes, I have found myself skipping the text because I don't feel like reading what turns out to be 3x the length of this review. The graphics aren't great, but it's not unappealing.
If you like hardcore survival, I highly recommend this.
