This is a unique FPS from a decade ago as of writing this - where the writing is cheesy at times, but always fun and good. It's written in such a way as to never come off as taking itself too seriously, and the characters make many enjoyable jokes.
It's rare of me to leave a review for an FPS to make it seem like an outstanding game, but here I am.
There are times where the combat gets tedious, but those times are actually rare. Normally this would be a death knell for an FPS, but the game manages to balance this out with a large array of real life weapons and Combo Fury Kills to keep it fun and accessible, without remaining tiresome for long.
The story is pretty simple, but should be enjoyed from your own perspective. The game isn't expensive, so it's worth getting - on sale or otherwise.
I hope you guys enjoy fighting dragons, zombies and vampires in WW1 as a crazy german scientist.
While still flawed, its a solid improvement over the original. Unlike the first game, it stays in world war 1, up until the last 2 levels, the last of which is just a boss fight. So if you were baited into the original by the wolfenstein in ww1 setting, this game will actually give you that. Better yet, while the main charater will run his yap during story sequences, he doesn't constantly quip like Simon did. The writing is still pretty cheesy though. Also had less game breaking bugs that the first, so that's a plus. For its price, I do think its worth giving this game a chance, even if you were turned off by the original.
There are a couple of things I need to get out of the way before reviewing:
1) I did not play the first game
2) I am halfway through (Level 5/10)
3) There are gonna be spoilers!
The base game
This FPS has everything you want to have in an FPS. Lots of different enemies, that are introduced gradually. So there are, as of now, new enemies in every single level. Oh yes, this game has levels, which is rare these days. Enemies are, to a point, tough to kill. You will find out their weak spots, which is perfect. Mechanics mostly work as intended, but there are a few glitches, like you bumping around on stuff. I got stuck to the scenery once, too. But I managed to get out of there.
The premise
This game, set during WW 1, has a promising setup. The design choice shows in the uniforms, surroundings, weaponry and so on. Love to detail, not only in level design. What annoys me is the American character. Actually, all characters suck. They are cliche, basically. Germans, Brits and Americans. Also, the voice actors kinda suck and the choice of words does not fit the specific nationality. This is just a little poxy, but not that bad.
The ugly (BIGGEST SPOILER HERE)
What I find really disturbing is that the game's mechanic is not useful most of the time. As I understood you are up against vampires and are one yourself. You should be collecting some sort of "rage" points and perform meele combinations. But the meele is broken to the point that you can't hit enemies at all. So I just go with shooting and that works just fine. The only use I see for my vampire abilities is to reload very fast in combat situations where scores of enemies swarm at you. That helps. Also, there only seem to be two or three music tracks repeated in a loop - either turn it down or kill it. Boss fights are easy, which brings me to...
The good
Boss fights! Also different vehicles (e.g. plane, tank) you get to ride/shoot. Get surprised!
Recommended for FPS fans, young and old.
