Explore deeper connections in these stunning and surreal Ages, uncover a story of ruthless family betrayal, and make choices that will affect both you, and the world of Myst itself.

Cyan, the indie studio that created the beloved classic, has reimagined Myst.

Built from the ground up to play both in VR as well as traditional flatscreen displays, Myst is teeming with new art, new sound, re-imagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization. Finally... the highly anticipated Myst 2D/VR experience has arrived!

Designed and built from the ground up in Unreal Engine, this newly-reimagined version of Myst includes fresh takes on the visuals in every area in the game. With both VR and 2D play experiences in mind, this definitive, modern edition of Myst will immerse you in the world in a way that has never been possible before.

Additionally, Myst includes many “comfort level” features for both new and experienced VR users, including the option to enable smooth or snap turning, quick travel up stairs and ladders, vertical height quantization, and more!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Do I need a VR headset to play Myst?
A: You do not need a VR headset to play Myst. Myst is playable with or without a VR headset.

Q: I bought Myst when it first came out in 1993. Can I get a free upgrade to this new version?
A: Thank you for your support over the years! We are not giving out free upgrades to previous purchasers of the original Myst. We put a lot of effort into making this new version of Myst and would appreciate your financial support again!

Q: I want to play Myst, but am concerned about my computer not meeting the minimum requirements. What should I do?
A: If your machine does not meet the minimum requirements and you still want to try Myst out, we recommend enabling one of our supersampling options through the graphics settings menu to see if it alleviates performance concerns. Depending on the storefront you purchase Myst from, you may be able to qualify for a refund through the store (not through Cyan support) if Myst does not run well on your platform. Please review each store platform refund policy for details.

Q: Will Myst support [insert language here] one day?
A: Possibly! We’d love to hear from you through our support team about any languages you’d like for us to support.

A nice re-release, with some exceptions

It's great to see the classic environments updated for a modern engine. And I think the puzzle randomization option is GREAT for replayability! It's been a long time since I've felt challenged by Myst. However, there are a few things about it that feel rushed when compared to the original. Everything is very brightly and evenly lit, making the environments feel a little flat. I would like to see more attention paid to the use of light, shadow and color to convey appropriate tones for each environment and make them feel more unique. The scale of the maps in this version feels unusually small. It's as if Cyan built out all the maps to a natural scale and then shrunk them down by 10% for some reason. The environments of the original felt a bit more natural in scale. But I'm not sure if this was maybe an unintended consequence of the click-heavy nature of Hypercard. In this version, you can walk from one end of Myst island to the other in a few seconds, which feels strange. And finally... the character models. I understand Cyan can't just re-film all the live-action FMVs now that all the actors are 30 years older, and they probably didn't want to resort to using the old low-rez FMV files, though I may have actually preferred that. But if you're going to use 3D models in your 2021 re-master of Myst built in the Unreal engine, they HAVE to look better than Toy Story 1. In contrast to the stunning environments and world-building Cyan is known for, these 3D models are inexcusable. The models themselves look like cheaply purchased stock assets, and the animation is amateur-level. The lip-synching doesn't even match the audio. I sincerely hope this gets fixed in the future. As it is right now, I'd say this version is fine for what it is. If you're a Myst fan you will find plenty of reasons to enjoy it. Just... close your eyes when those 3D models show up.

Soo good!

I have Myst in all of it's forms and this is the best one so far! Any fan has to play this game! It's beautiful, just stunning! The sounds and music are incredible as well. There's so much detail, it's mind blowing. The VR really puts it over the top!

Decent Excuse to Revist an Old Classic

As far as 3D remakes of Myst go (quite a few funny enough) I prefer this one over RealMyst. If for no other reason than the movement controls are just plain better. Pros: Environments look nice and it has decent movement controls. I definitely appreciated the gameplay subtitles options. I always had trouble with the sound cue puzzles so that was a welcome addition. Didn't try the 'randomize puzzle' option but that's a neat option. Cons: The 3D character models are really lacking. That got partially mitigated with the option to have the original FMV though (an option not available at launch it seems). Also not a fan of some of the color palette changes such as on Stoneship Age, but that's subjective on my part. As far as whether to get this if you have the original? If you don't have VR, then the value is an excuse to revist an old classic, so I recommend getting it on discount.

It is Myst

Yes by now if your a fan of Myst like myself you have played many a Myst across several versions of Windows, or even a few consoles. Now you ask yourself, why would I want this one if I own one version of it? Well Honestly it looks the absolute best from the collection of the titles easily. With the option of VR to boot. Some of the downsides to it is the original content or FMV is long gone due to being lost to the tides of time. The game is built from the ground up impressively. It feels like I am playing the game for the first time again. If the price is a little much for you its worth a purchase, even if you own different versions for some quality of life navigation.

Great reimagining of the original Myst

I've been a big fan of Myst for nearly 20 years, though I was initially skeptical of this release, considering it hasn't been that long since the last re-release (RealMyst MasterPiece Edition was release in 2014, while Myst MasterPiece Edition and RealMyst were released in 2000) and I don't play games in VR. That said, the visual quality of Myst 2021 or Myst VR is way beyond that of RealMyst Masterpiece Edition, and I think the randomized puzzle solutions are a great addition for veterans who are basically just going through the motions on replays at this point. For better or worse, Cyan has opted not to faithfully recreate the environments from the original Myst, like they did with previous 3D remakes, and instead redesign much of the environments to be even more detailed, while staying true to the original style, and likely making other changes based on use of the Unreal Engine, like adding clearly defined buttons to open doors, while previous version would simply have you click on the door. You could say it's not quite the Myst you know, but you know it's Myst. One gripe however is use of 3d modeled characters in place of the earlier live action, especially since the audio from the original live action is still used and Cyan's previous Unreal Engine game did use live action. Perhaps Sirrus and Achenar were redesigned to resemble their appearance in Ubisoft's Myst IV: Revelation.
