Do you like stories? If so, then I’ll tell you one. But it won’t be just any old story. It’s going to be different, because it’s about real people, about events that are touching and horrifying even now. Let’s go back in time. It all began with a meeting between a boy and a girl who came from two different worlds. For a short time they had good laughs together, taking joy simply from each other’s company. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. War broke out – the Evil King plundered the city and his robot-soldiers appeared everywhere. Citizens were separated and some of them were marked and forced to move out of their homes and live in a place that was sealed off from the rest of the city by a huge wall. Fortunately the children were not alone – they had each other. Their friendship allowed them to stay together, even though fate seemed to try to tear them apart. That’s the story behind My Memory of Us, a game dedicated to those that were separated, but managed to find the strength to meet each other again.
What makes My Memory of Us stand out is that the story is told from the perspective of two friends who complete each other. Each of them has their own abilities – she can run fast, he can sneak – but only when they work together as a team can they overcome all adversities. You just want to have fun with your friend. Go on then! Grab her hand and find out what adventures are waiting for you outside. Together, there’s nothing in the world that can stop you.
A moving story about friendship and love in dangerous times
Beautiful, sketch-like graphics inspired by naïve art
Pair mechanics: take control of two characters with different skills and abilities, or control them as a pair
A grotesque tale mixed with bittersweet humor
The events shown in the game are based on actual stories from war
A dialogue system built around the language of symbolic pictures
Various logical puzzles in 2.5D
A story that offers deeper meaning, set in historical realities
The whole game is in a smooth decryption process. When I saw the big boss, I thought that I would finally make a big effort, so I followed the idea of the conventional horizontal arcade to "break the weak points" → "attack the key points". Until I tried more than ten times, I realized whether it would be a decryption again? Oh, my God, I was so disappointed (but it's not the designer's fault).
Despite this, the game is worth playing! recommend!
It’s relatively easy to make a game about World War II, and there have been plenty.
But it’s almost impossible to make a game about the holocaust. A game, being interactive, has to be, on its most basic, fundamental level, fun. A game can tell a tragic story, it can be terrifying and gruesome, but it still has to be fun to keep playing. And you can’t make the holocaust fun. Any attempt to gamify it would feel wrong, disgusting even.
So how do you do it? Well, the makers of My Memory of Us found a way, and they deserve all the credit in the world for that.
But what if you make it into an allegorical tale, a memory of someone who lived through it as a child told decades later to another child? A story in which the Nazis become evil robots, the world is a black and white storybook, a fantastical tale kept in somewhat diesel-punk sci-fi style, and the whole truth of a lot of what is happening goes over a child’s head, but is, without spelling anything out, horrifyingly clear to those who know history? Yes, you can certainly gamify a tale like that. You can have fun escaping evil robots and still at times be frozen stiff with the horror of what you know to be hiding beneath the fantastical veneer of the story.
The game itself is composed of fun puzzles and stealth sections, sometimes combined into a more complex sequence of both at once. The puzzles are mostly quite easy, and therefore accessible for younger audience, but thanks to their great variety remain quite entertaining for adults as well. The brilliance of the gameplay is that pretty much all the time you need to use both the characters to advance, and when they get separated it’s a profound enough change to how you play. The gameplay helps empathize with the characters, which is the best possible kind of storytelling a game can achieve.
My Memory of Us is a clever, fun, beautiful, profoundly sad game (with superb narration by Patrick Stewart).
The graphics are good, the game isn't so boring as a 2d scene game. Music made well, the controls are good.
The story and its mood are designed acceptable and fun. Scene voiceovers are good to.
