Honestly I'm only writing a review because there's a 1 star review on here from LotarWc2 that's infuriating.
Essentially the review (while stating that they've never played the game) states that "I don't need to play this game to be pretty positive that this game has paid premium gacha, because I can see 2 types of currency in the top left corner".
Ugh - first off to be clear there is NO PAID CONTENT IN THE GAME.
There are things you unlock by playing the game but there is nothing that is locked behind a paywall and there is no way to spend money to unlock anything. The two supposed currencies that LotarWc2 refers to are your health and the coins you've earned in the run. It's similar to Slay the Spire where you earn coins in the run that you can use to upgrade your deck for that run.
As for the game itself - it scratches the same itch that Slay the Spire did. It took me a couple games to get used to the differences but it's really a fantastic game on it's own and I highly recommend it.
But really I just wrote this because I've had a couple beers and I got grumbly after reading that review...
I did find a few small details, which I did not like about the game, but they are very minor and of personal notice.
All in all though.
Once you load up the game you are thrown into the tutorial straight away, no waiting, you just boot into it. Which for this game is a nice touch.
The game itself is fairly simple on the surface, but the RnG and tactics adds another layer to the whole experience. Like for each area you have to choose, which way to run your train. Left or Right, and taking one route will give you access to different things, so choose wisely.
I have never really been into card games that much, on the digital platform, but this one is both fun, relaxing (mostly) and it will not take hours to complete a run.
I have done a few runs already and they say "No playthrough is ever the same". Well, that depends on how high a variety you are looking for, but taken at base value they are right.
The graphics are rather nice, with some cool creatures to defend your train and some vile heavenly attackers...
So is the game worth buying?
It surely depends on your taste, but I do think that many people will enjoy this little gem of a game, even if it is not your main genre, or handful of genres. It is a casual game, which does challenge you to think and plan, while in general having fun and enjoying a short break from reality.
This game could get addictive, so play responsibly and enjoy.
I currently have 42 hours on Steam. I would say that it's one of the best deck-building Rouge-Lites since Slay the Spire. Absolutely worth it if you like these kind of games
The primary gameplay loop is a combination of deck-building and tower defense. There are 3 floors in which you can play units and spells against waves of enemies to stop them from reaching the heart of your train, with a boss every third round. And even then, you still have a chance as core can fight back but it is not something you should rely on. As you go on you go through the nine circles of Hell collecting new cards for your deck, upgrading them in shops, and collecting relics to try and give you a chance.
To add variety to the game, there are multiple paths FTL-style with events that can get you more cards, higher difficulties known as Covenents which add a modifier that makes the run more challenging, and you have 5 different clans that have different playstyles in their cards in which you pick two of them. The first clan that you pick comes with a free champion that you will always have that can be upgraded at least three times during the game with different powers.
If I had any complaints its that some runs can be easily ruined by RNG and just not finding the cards and buffs that you need. Also there are just some clans that are just flat out better than others in terms of buffs and cards.
Otherwise, you can get through at least 3 runs in just under 2 hours, there's a lot of depth that allows experimentation, and gives you the classic feeling of "Just one more..."
As a Steam game owner, I must say I played alot of it, and it is great, nice progression for casual player like me and interesting variety of playstyles.
Unfortunately, it didn't come on Steam and GoG on same time, so of course I bought it on Steam first, since I couldn't wait.
I like DRM-free, but I don't like paying for same things twice (I know supporting devs is nice - I am a developer also - but I still have a financial budget, and Cyberpunk is coming out soon and I might have to upgrade my PC also...)
Please do releases on all platforms at same time, I really like to support GoG and devs on different platforms.
I don't have a lot of time to play games, so being able to jump in and out is important. Not only is this game incredibly fun, but I can also plug away bit-by-bit when time permits. The gameplay itself is like playing multiple stages of Slay the Spire concurrently. The choices around upgrading from area to area is enjoyable and makes each unique quite diverse in how it's approached. The challenge and progression are right-sized, allowing for decent progression each run and the difficulty ramping up towards the end.
Definitely recommend picking this up, especially if on sale.
