The Reason I Came Over To GOG

I had been looking for this game for years and I finally did a little bit of digging and research and found GOG through looking for this game. The whole reason I got a GOG account is due to this game. The game has decent depth to the turn-based combat and has a variety of weapons and different herc (mech) models that you can use. I love the bioderm (pilots for your hercs) customization and I love having specialized units. Each herc/pilot almost feels like a complete character to your party and I have had a blast playing this game. I never beat the game as a kid but when I bought it 3 years ago I played it all the way through and finally beat the game on easy. I am now running a campaign on normal and I have been able to just plan and lay down what I want from my group and getting promotions and access to more hercs and greater technologies is always fun. I highly recommend this game to those who love turn-based combat with some depth. GOG's version runs flawlessly (which is why I love GOG) and yes if graphics bother you this game they aren't bad for being 25+ years old and I don't mind that much, but if you do, fair warning.

Nostalgia in an .exe

Great game. There are definetly issues here and there with the UI. Nothing worth relegating it to the dust-bin. Just issues of a bygone era. Overall it's still one my favourite video games of all time. The details and love put into every element of the game really show. For example, if you right click most objects around the base you will get a lore-building or comedic description.

Worth a try

The game is difficult to set up right, the sound is the most painful, as there is no in-game sliders. It's on or off, and some sounds are frequent and ear-splitting. Asides from that, it's a good challenge, a little grindy but plenty of stuff to play around with in the mech lab if that's your thing. After the first critical mission it does get easier, but that first one is a doozy.

So great, I love it!!!

I had this game as a kid 25 years ago. Still love the concept and was blasted, that it works perfectly on windows 11. I wish there would be games like this with modern graphics and improvemts with todays engines. Thank you GOG for making it possible for me to play this game in 2025 <3

The other Mechwarrior

I'm very glad to find this here. Cyberstorm, for me the stand-out part of the "other" 90s-00s mech franchise (Earthsiege, far better known for the Tribes games than the actual mech ones), and possibly the first turn based tactical game I ever played. I was incredibly worried as to how it would hold up, I was not too disappointed. The most interesting thing for me was that I found I remembered the sound effects exactly, despite not having really paid much attention to them back in the day or them being all that remarkable, honestly. Anyway, nostalgia aside, it's a pretty decent, if not incredibly deep turn based mech game. It's got a great atmosphere (it's actually quite sparse, just very effective), graphics that hold up alright within the genre context (though some of the pre-rendered walking animations in cutscences are pretty terrible), a decent sort of story, (apparently) good sound design, and generally enjoyable gameplay. The AI is pretty decent, especially for the age, and it's very rare you feel that it's cheating to compete with you. The biggest complaints - some things just don't seem to work. A few tutorial videos are missing (not that it's a complicated game to figure out), a few of the lore-related features seem gone as well. It's nothing game breaking, and if you hadn't played this 20 years ago, you'd likely not notice this. Biggest flaw besides that - as with many games of the era, you can remove much of the challenge by grinding hard right off the hop. Games like this aren't supposed to have long playthroughs, they're sort of fragile like that. All in all, it's a good old game. While there's nothing super special about it relative to similar games out there now-a-days, it's still fun to play, cheap compared to newer offerings, and holds up well enough to maybe be a good way to get into turn based tactical games in general. Best of all, it has hotseat multiplayer (as well as email MP), something utterly lacking in most modern turn based games.
