M&M 4&5

I only know a great deal about World of Xeen which is part 4 and 5 combined into 1 game. Its dated but wow, I have played this game thru so many times since I picked it up as a kid (still got my CD's). The characters are voice acted which is nice for its time. The worlds are both huge grids that you will want to explore every inch of. The puzzles in this game are creative and the difficulty of both the puzzles and the mobs is quite challenging. The atmosphere goes from light to quite dark but retains a feeling of enchantment and charm. If you don't mind (or like) retro graphics, shutterstep grid-based movement and a huge challenging world(s) then this game is worth the money for the pack by itself.

Great old school RPGs

I played 1-5 all those years ago and these are great games. I'd have to say that 3-5 are the best of the lot.....but that's probably because I was a programmer on those three. :-)

World of Xeen is Excellent!

I'd always wanted to play World of Xeen again, and now I have. Xeen is M&M 4-5. Separately, M&M 3 is also fun. M&M 6 isn't for my tastes. For Xeen, I chose the Adventurer setting without knowing it's easier; but truly it was an adventure! The plot is silly, but every area is different enough to remain interesting. It's easy to die, so frequent saving is imperative; but the game moves along if you discover enough secrets and go on to the correct next area. Aging is not a problem, though frequent teleports will significantly reduce aging. Gem shortages are almost never a problem. While gold does run out and become the limiting factor instead of experience, you don't need a team of level 200s with obsidian items to win easily. The original game came with a map. You'll want one. You'll also want to familiarise yourself with the auto-notes, quest, and quest-items sections. Guides can be helpful for some things, such as for listing item attributes. However, I found that walkthroughs lessened the fun of the game. It's fun wandering around aimlessly at times, and the game isn't meant to be completed in one sitting. There are a few minor bugs. 1. The mouse cursor phases out at the top of the screen. If wanting to click the items button, you can use the mouse but it's easier to use the "i" button. 2. A click on the menu gem at the centre is often mistaken as a click on an object behind it.

Owned the CD Version

I always look for These original might and magic games on Steam. Except for HOMM3 enhanced, they never come around. My brother picked this 6 CD pack up for me for my birthday 20 years ago and It's been fan-friggin-tastic, 7 is still by far my favorite and I truly believe it needs a remake. 6 is just as good, (The events in 6 take place JUST prior to HOMM3, the events in 7 take place Just after). The previous games, though DOS based, were very good as well. I'm buying it again because after my latest PC rebuild, I realized I neglected to leave a home for my optical drive. Seriously, I cannot stress enough how much fun I had with these games. 6 and 7 were the last "action-or-turn-based" games I played until KOTOR and KOTOR II. I'd love to see a remake of this with the KOTOR engine and Elder scrolls graphics, but until that never-gonna-happen magical day (because Ubisoft now owns the rights and can't figure that the story and original schools are what made these games wonderful, so they put out all the wrong parts in MMX Legacy), I keep going back to these over and over. And over. And over.

Interesting

Not my most favourite kind of RPGs, too much grind and combat, too little story, but for what they want to be, they do an excellent job. If they're your kind of game. Something which I think is fascinating, is the importance of mapping out the worlds by yourself, and how this was even used for puzzles.
