Midnight Scenes: The Highway

Sure, it has its charme. but 10 minutes gameplay??? and sooo easy, that I felt shame remembering such games in early 90s . this first part is better than the second. the second was easy, like made for little kids finally. you have 5(?) parts... paying full price 25 Euros... for ... 2-3 hours max?

I did thoroughly enjoy the Twilight Zone vibe; I could practically hear Rod Serling narrating that introduction text. The few little puzzles were simple, probably zero challenge for anyone with the slightest point&click experience. But the puzzles were logical and did fit the little narrative. I LOVED the basic interface and gameplay. The atmosphere was what I call 'cosy creepy'; not scary but pleasantly strange and unnerving, But: 21 minutes was too short to have it make any of an impact on me. I pointed, I clicked, I was finished... Felt more like a 99 cent experience than a 2,99 one. Hard to really recommend because of the ultra short length but I'd imagine if this was apart of a 5 episode package I'd be delighted with this first installment and eager to play on.

This only took me about 20 minutes to complete. I wish it had been five hours. Everything in this itty-bitty game is properly fine-tuned. The B&W style is wonderfully evocative and fairly unique. The interactivity is smooth, logical, and intuitive. The story is told entirely in visuals and just spooky and weird enough to be fun. I'm gonna start picking up all these games.

I completely agree with @Magnitus' review, so I only add a thought: in the last fifteen years horror movies have become the best ground where directors experiment new ways of delivering metaphorical messages. It would be nice seeing the same direction also in videogames, and I bought this one hoping that. Alas, this is not the case. It's a straightforward, classic horror (both for good and bad things). For those who ate a lot of it, it's nothing new.

Very short game but solid atmospheric horror. The Twlight Zone & Night Gallery influences shine through greatly. Beautiful pixel art on top of a dream-like atmosphere that feels isolated from reality. Highly recommend playing this one.
