Atmospheric but not super engaging

Midnight Girl paints a pretty picture of mid-sixties France, but could be more engaging as a game. One of the big draws is the visual style: The environments may look fairly simple but do an excellent job of setting the tone of e.g. an empty metro station or a run-down hotel. Mechanically, the game involves searching through rooms and passages for items and combining them with the environment in classic adventure game fashion, punctuated by occasional simple stealth elements involving patrolling NPCs. The puzzles are fairly straightforward and often predictable, and I found the process of running back and forth between locations less than engaging - it felt less like an exciting heist and more like a long series of very short fetch quests. This was especially noticeable in one of the middle sequences, which came across as a bit repetitive and didn't add much to the story. I think it's a shame that the story isn't developed more, because there are hints of greatness there. Monique's relationship with her father is introduced very nicely right at the start, but then doesn't play much of a role later. And her relationship with her new partner in crime is only presented through a few short dialogue snippets and cutscenes. In terms of the length of the game, I completed it in a bit over three hours, which was fine. However, the experience could have been improved by either making the game a bit more compact with less repetition, or extending it with a bit more story. I think that just a few more snippets of text or dialogue, in some form, could have made a lot of difference. In my mind, the limited story content of Midnight Girl unfortunately struggles to balance the underwhelming gameplay, but the overall atmosphere is helped by the visual style.
